RIPTON, Vt. - The Dartmouth Ski Team completed a second consecutive undefeated season Sunday at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) championships hosted by Middlebury College at the Rikert Ski Touring Center and the Middlebury Snow Bowl. The Big Green continued Saturday's lead to score a total of 846 points, comfortably besting the University of Vermont in second place (806 points) and host Middlebury in third (741 points).
Although the men and women in both the alpine and cross country disciplines solidly contributed to the Big Green victory, it was women's cross country who set the tone for the day, sweeping the podium and claiming six spots in the top-10, for the second day in a row. Dartmouth junior Ida Sargent won the 15-kilometer mass-start freestyle event, setting the pace for sophomore Rosie Brennan (2nd) and Sophie Caldwell (3rd). Senior Katie Bono--Saturday's leader--placed fifth, and Dartmouth sophomores Erika Flowers and Stephanie Crocker finished ninth and tenth.
Vermont's Franz Bernstein led the men's 20-kilometer mass-start freestyle competition, followed by Wyatt Fereday of Colby College (2nd) and Middlebury's Patrick Johnson (3rd). Scoring for the Big Green in a three-man sweep was sophomore Eric Packer (7th), freshman Sam Tarling (8th), and senior Patrick O'Brien (9th).
Dartmouth junior Ace Tarberry broke into the podium for a second place finish in the men's giant slalom event led by Vermont's David Donaldson. Robby Kelley, also skiing for Vermont placed third. Backing Tarberry's podium finish were Dartmouth sophomores Trevor Leafe (6th) and Luke McLaughry (11th) who each turned out two consistent runs to contribute to the Big Green's undefeated title.
Vermont also dominated in the women's giant slalom, with Bryana Park and Megan Ryley taking fist and second place followed by New Hampshire's Veronique Archambault-Leger, but it was not enough to upset the Big Green's overall lead. Dartmouth junior Kelsey Roddick placed 11th, senior Tina Roberts was 13th, and freshman Annie Rendall took 23rd.
To conclude the 2010 season, the NCAA Championships will be held March 10-13 in Steamboat Springs, Colo., hosted by the University of Colorado. Teams are allowed to compete with a maximum of three men and three women from each discipline. The Dartmouth Ski Team is excited to see what it can do this time around after last year's undefeated EISA season and seventh place result at NCAAs. Looking ahead to the coming weeks, women's cross country head coach Cami Thompson commented, "I am very proud of this team; they have worked hard to be undefeated this season, particularly this weekend. I am looking forward to NCAAs and I hope we can put in a performance to be proud of."
