STOWE, Vt. – After the third and final day of competition at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) winter carnival hosted by the University of Vermont, the Dartmouth ski team came out on top once again for their third consecutive carnival victory. Just eight points ahead of Vermont in second place (882 points), the Big Green took first with a total of 890 points. The University of New Hampshire followed in third place with 745 points. The return of its top cross skiers from international competition was the boost Dartmouth needed to overtake Vermont and claim a victory.
On the women's side, Dartmouth juniors Rosie Brennan and Ida Sargent, as well as sophomore Sophie Caldwell all returned to the EISA circuit this weekend after two weeks of competing at the World Junior Championships in Hinterzarten, Germany. Vermont skier Caitlin Patterson claimed first in the women's 10-kilometer skate event, tailed closely by Dartmouth juniors Rosie Brennan (2nd) and Ida Sargent (3rd). Dartmouth sophomore Sophie Caldwell placed 4th. The Big Green took five of the top-10 spots, with Big Green sophomore Erika Flowers finishing 6th, senior Katie Bono finishing 7th, and sophomore Stephanie Crocker taking 14th place.
The men's 10-kilometer skate race was won by Patrick Johnson of Middlebury College. Saturday's leader Franz Bernstein of Vermont took second, and New Hampshire skier Dylan McGuffin rounded out the podium in third place. Dartmouth junior Nils Koons placed 5th, followed by sophomore teammate Erik Packer (8th) and freshman Sam Tarling (14th). Packer and Tarling also just retuned from the World Junior Championships.
EISA racing will recommence next weekend, February 11-12, for the Dartmouth winter carnival. The alpine races will take place at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme, NH, and the venue for the cross races will be determined later this week and is dependent on snow availability.
