HAMDEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team took its first game at the Quinnipiac Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-21) win over Hartford on Friday. The victory improved the Big Green to 4-0.
Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led all players with a double-double, 14 kills, 12 digs. Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) was the top setter for Dartmouth with 34 while Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) recorded a game-high 20 digs and Jessie Hartman (Woodside, Calif.) added 11.
In the first set, the Big Green went up quickly and led by as much as seven before Hartford came back to tie the contest at 7-7. The two sides traded points but Dartmouth eventually took another six-point lead and looked to put the set away but Hartford pulled to within two at 17-15. Thanks to points by Baird and Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.) the Big Green pulled away to take the first set.
In the second set, it was Dartmouth all the way as the Big Green went up by six and eventually led by as much as nine as the Hawks were never able to close the gap as the Big Green won easily.
The third set was the closest of the match as the two teams traded points back and forth from the outset. Hartford took the lead early and went up by as much as seven points before Dartmouth rebounded as Baird served the Big Green to three straight points and the lead at 18-15. The Hawks tied the contest two more times but Dartmouth put the match away on a kill by Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.).
The Big Green will take on host Quinnipiac on Saturday at 2 p.m. and St. Peter's at 4:30 p.m.
