HANOVER, N.H. — On the strength of three golfers among the top 20, the Big Green women's golf team ended the first day of competition as host of the Dartmouth Invitational in fourth place out of the 22 teams competing with a 324 (+36). Senior Katie Gulemi (Fairfield, Conn.) was the low scorer for the Green on the par-72, 5,807-yard course at Hanover Country Club, carding a 78 (+6) to tie for ninth.
Boston College holds a nine-stroke lead over Towson with a 306 (+18) with Dartmouth 18 strokes back. Hartford's Sarah Sideranko was the only golfer to make par on the day with a 72 to lead the 116 participants, but none of her teammates shot better than 14-over as the Hawks sit firmly in ninth place.
Gulemi struggled on the front nine at seven-over par, but performed very well on the back at one-under for her 78. Close behind her was sophomore Colleen Carroll (Bettendorf, Iowa) with a 79 (+7) to tie for 14th, while junior co-captain Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) tied for 19th with an 80 (+8). Both sophomore Julie Campbell (Bozeman, Mont.) and freshman Sarah Knapp (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) rounded out the team score with 87 (+15) apiece.
Also competing for the Big Green as individuals were freshman Evan Sterneck (Leawood, Kan.) in a tie for 31st with an 83 (+11), junior Kathleen Quirk (Kansas City, Mo.) tied for 38th with an 84 (+12) and sophomore Emily Hyman (Chappaqua, N.Y.) tied for 55th with an 86 (+14).
The Dartmouth Invitational will conclude on Sunday.
