Hanover, NH - The youth of the Big Green was on display on Tuesday evening as the underclassmen propelled the volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Providence at Leede Arena. A total of seven underclassmen played, including five freshmen. Sophomore Alissa Santa Maria (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was the star of the group as she started at setter for Dartmouth and tallied 35 assists, five digs and two kills.
The two squads went back and forth in the first set with Dartmouth only holding a 11-10 lead midway through the set. From there, the Big Green offense let loose going on a 14-4 run to win the opening set, 25-15.
All of the momentum Dartmouth earned in the first set disappeared quickly as the Friars opened the second on a 5-0 tear. The Big Green worked its way back into the contest and tied the set at eight. Providence stretched the lead again by three, 12-9, but Dartmouth used a timeout to kill the rally. The Big Green used the timeout wisely as it gained its first lead of the second set, 15-14, after a kill from freshman Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.). Providence used a timeout but to no avail as Dartmouth never reliquished the lead and won the second set, 25-19.
The third set was a comedy of errors for the Friars as they committed 13 errors and Dartmouth used the mistakes to its advantage. The Big Green never trailed in the third and won convincingly, 25-15.
The upperclassmen got into the action as well as junior Madeline Baird (Austin Texas) led all players in kills with 14. She just missed a double-double as she also recorded nine digs. Junior Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was just off Baird's pace with 13 kills. Junior Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) led all players with 13 digs.
The Big Green finished the evening with 46 kills and just 12 errors in 106 attempts. The .321 hitting percentage was the second-best this season, the squad hit .325 against Rutgers on Sept. 18th. The Friars were led by senior Emily Morris who had 10 digs and she also led the team in kills with six.
Dartmouth returns to Ivy League play on Friday, Oct. 1, traveling to Harvard, game time 7:00 pm. The Big Green defeated the Crimson, 3-1, last Saturday at Leede Arena.
