ITHACA, N.Y. — On Sunday, junior Xander Centenari (Towson, Md.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Northeast Regional hosted by Cornell.
Centenari, the tournament's fourth seed, defeated Tim Klanke of Brown in the round of 32, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4. In the round of 16, Centenari took on Nate Gery of Columbia and came away with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. On Monday, Centenari plays the fifth seed from St. John's, Vasko Mladenov, on Monday. The two played at the NTC Invitational earlier this year with Centenari winning in straight sets.
Sophomore Cameron Ghorbani (Lexington, Mass.) upset the 11 seed from Columbia, Haig Schneiderman, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, in the round of 32, but lost to the second seed, Matija Pecotic, of Princeton in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-3.
Senior Michael Laser (Glencoe, Ill.) lost to the three seed, Akash Muppidi of Boston College, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 32. Sophomore Brandon DeBot (Stevens Point, Wis.) lost to Jonathan Pearlman, the top seed from Harvard, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32. Freshman Chris Kipouras (San Ramon, Calif.) was knocked out of the tournament by the seven seed, Milo Hauk of St. John's, in the round of 32.
In doubles play, Centenari and Laser lost to the ninth seed, Princeton's Matt Spindler and Matt Slow, 8-4 in the round of 16.
The tournament continues on Monday.
