HANOVER, N.H. - A strong second-half performance and a physical style of play wasn't enough for the Dartmouth field hockey team as it fell Friday afternoon, 2-1, to No. 18 Boston University at Chase AstroTurf Field. Senior Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) scored the lone goal of the game for the Big Green (7-4) who fell for just the second time at home all season.
The Terriers (7-5) scored once in each half with Dana Centofanti and Kate Murphy collecting the tallies. Centofanti scored 14:14 into the game on a loose ball in the circle, sliding a rebound past Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) for the opening goal.
Murphy's marker came just over 11 minutes into the second half and gave her team the 2-0 lead.
Hood's league-leading 11th goal of the season came just under four minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Like many of Hood's other goals in her career, this one came on a penalty corner, this time with junior Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) making the original pass and freshman Janine Leger (Johannesburg, South Africa) on the stop as both collected assists on the play.
Masini continues to add to her league-leading total as she now has 12 helpers in 2011.
Despite a much-improved second half in terms of play, the Big Green were not able to get the game-tying goal in the final minutes to force overtime, falling, 2-1.
BU outshot Dartmouth, 21-10, in the game, but seven of the 10 shots for the Big Green were in the final 35 minutes of play. All six of Dartmouth's penalty corners in the game came in the second half as well, while the Terriers had four in the first and five in the second.
Vakiener finished the game with six saves, including several spectacular sprawling stops to keep her team in contention. BU's Valentina Cerda had three saves in 70 minutes of play and was helped out by two defensive saves from her teammates playing behind her.
Dartmouth returns to action on Monday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Providence in a nonconference matchup at Chase Field.
