CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2011-12 slate with a convincing 176.5 to 123.5 win over Cornell, but fell to Harvard, 187.5 to 110.5 at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
Dartmouth went 1-2 in the 400 free relay taking the event with a time of 3:30.74. The winning relay team consisted of Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) and Christine Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.), Siobhan Hengemuhle (Boulder, Colo.) and Elizabeth Kamai (Conte Madera, Calif.). The Big Green also took second in the event with a time of 3:35.41.
The women had three event winners and were paced by freshman Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.) who posted a lifetime best in the 200 fly while also winning the 100 fly with a time of 56.84. In a back-and-forth meet, the Big Green was able to pull ahead late for the first dual-meet win of the young season.
Sophomore Danielle Kerr continued her dominance in the distance events by winning the 1000 free with a time of 10:14.52 against the Big Red while her sister Christine Kerr took top honors in the 500 free against Cornell with a time of 5:03.21 In the 200 free, Christine Kerr paced the Big Green taking first place with a time of 1:52.29 while Sasha Alcon (Fremont, Calif.) took second place with a time of 1:54.14
Dartmouth's freshman provided a spark throughout the meet. Hengemuhle took top honors in the 100 free with a time of 52.30 while classmate Alcon was the second Dartmouth swimmer to finish against the Big Red with a time of 52.68.
In the backstroke events, the Big Green went 1-2-3 against Cornell. In the 200 back, Meredith Sweeney (Hindsdale, Ill.) led the Big Green taking first with a time of 2:06.15 while senior Galen Barry (Wayne, Pa.) and freshman Rebecca Butler (West Orange, N.J.) took second and third with times of 2:07.14 and 2:08.78, respectively.
The Big Green was well represented in the diving events. Senior Erica Serpico (Moorestown, N.J.) took first place in the 1-meter with a score of 2:47.55 while Katy Feng (Westford, Mass.) and Kendall MacRae (Sherborn, Mass.) placed second and third with scores of 246.20 and 243.65. Feng continued her dominance on the 3-meter, winning the competition with a score of 251.75.
Dartmouth returns to the water for its 2011-12 home opener on Saturday (Nov. 19) when it welcomes Ivy League foe, Brown to Karl Michael Pool for a dual meet. Competition begins at 11: 00 a.m.
