HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth swimming and diving programs opened the 2011-12 home slate with two wins over Brown on Saturday (Nov. 19) at Michael Karl Pool. The Dartmouth men posted a 184-111 win over the Bears and the women posted a 172-123 win. This marks the second consecutive season the Big Green have swept the Bears.
The diving programs started the meet on a hot note with both the men and women winning the 3-meter competition. Freshman won both events with Kendall MacRae (Sherborn, Mass.) taking the top women's spot with a score of 294.23 and Ryan Shelley (Sudbury, Mass.) earning the top spot for the men with a score of 317.78.
The Dartmouth women started the swimming competition with a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay. The Big Green also continued their dominance in the long distance events going 1-2-3 in the 1000-meter with Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) winning the event with a time of 10:19.95 while Erin Henn (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Kirstin Hocheder (Tucson, Ariz.) finished in second and third with times of 10:36.25 and 10.39.63, respectively.
Nejc Zupan (Kanmik, Slovenia) won the 1000-meter free for the second consecutive week finishing more than 15 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor with a time of 9:39.02 and followed with win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.40.
The Big Green did well on both sides in the 100 backstroke with Meredith Sweeney (Hindsdale, Ill.) winning the women's event with a time of 58.38 while senior captain Galen Barry (Wayne, Pa.) swam a season-best 59.94 for a fourth-place finish. The men finished 1-2-3 with senior Michael Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) leading the way with a time of 50.73 while teammates Ray Li (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Matt Long (Parker, Colo.) took second and third with times of 53.79 and 53.81, respectively. Sweeny also dominated the competition in the 200 backstroke and used a fast start while swimming to her second win of the day with at time of 2:05.07.
In the butterfly events, Dartmouth swam well in the 200 butterfly. In the women's event, the Big Green went 1-2-3 with Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.) winning the event with a time of 2:04.62 ahead of Kendall Farnham (Severna Park, Md.) (2:06.57) and Caitlin Nicholson (Ithaca, N.Y.) (2:07.23). It was a good race in the men's race between Dartmouth's Albert Roth (Aurora, Ill.) and Brown's Thomas Glenn. Glenn squeaked out the win but Roth finished second with a time of 1:51.34.
The freshman men had a good showing in the 200 breaststroke led by Konrad von Moltke (Kenilworth, Il.) who won the event with a time of 2:09.25 ahead of classmates Jay Schulte (Anchorage, Alaska) and Cameron Price (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.).
The Dartmouth divers continued to dive well in early season competition with the men and women both wining on the 1-meter. Shelley won for the men with a time of 320.93 while Katy Feng (Westfield, Mass.) won the women's event 273.16.
Brianna Borgolini of Brown set a new pool record in the women's 100 breast with a time of 1:04.31 breaking the old record of 1:04.62 set in 1998.
Dartmouth heads to Hawaii for its annual training trip and will resume action on Saturday (Jan. 14) when it hosts Yale and Penn at Karl Michael Pool. The women's team will compete beginning at 11 a.m. and the men's competition will start at 3 p.m.
