STOWE, Vt. — The Dartmouth Big Green men's and women's ski teams finished up at the NCAA Skiing Championships on Saturday with the slalom, and junior
Trevor Leafe (Monroe, N.H.) placed fourth for first-team All-America honors in the men's race as Dartmouth wound up with 643 points in third in the team standings, its best finish since winning the national title in 2007. Colorado took home the title with 831 points, comfortably ahead of Utah in second at 750.5.
With one final run left in the day, Dartmouth found itself in fourth place, 20 points behind New Mexico. But the trio of Leafe, sophomore
Evan Diamond (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior
Peter Ankeny (Wayzata, Minn.) each posted strong times to allow the Big Green to take second in the men's slalom with 94 points, just three behind Colorado. Leafe finished with a combined time of 1:41.90 to claim his stake on fourth among the individuals. Diamond placed 13th with his time of 1:45.11, and Ankeny was right behind in 14th at 1:45.92.
In the women's slalom, junior
Annie Rendall (South Burlington, Vt.) had a terrific first time of 58.22 seconds and was sitting in fourth with one more run to go. Unfortunately she could not finish her second time down the mountain, leaving senior
Courtney Hammond (Mercer Island, Wash.) and junior
Erin Fucigna (Hopkinton, Mass.) in the standings. Hammond improved her time on the second attempt by nearly seven seconds and placed 14th at 1:58.51, while Fucigna topped her first time by more than four seconds and posted a total of 2:00.08, good for 17th.
Over the course of the eight events, Dartmouth got 11 All-America performances, three in the alpine and eight in the Nordic events, including an individual champion in the men's 10K freestyle by sophomore
Sam Tarling (Cumberland, Maine). Big Green skiers who earned two All-America honors were senior
Nils Koons (Sidney, Maine) for the men on the first team in the 10K and second team in the 20K classic; senior
Rosie Brennan (Park City, Utah) earned first-team honors in the women's 5K freestyle and second team in the 15K classic; and Leafe on the second team in the giant slalom and first team today in the slalom.
