CLEARWATER, FLA. — The Dartmouth softball team started its Spring Break trip on Thursday with a 5-0 victory over Long Island in Clearwater, Fla. The Big Green were led by sophomore pitcher Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.), who pitched a complete-game shutout. It marked Gray's first win of the season and it gives Dartmouth a two-game winning streak. The Big Green improved to 3-3, while the Blackbirds fell to 7-19.
Dartmouth scored all of its five runs in the first two innings and relied on the arm of Gray to cruise to victory. In the first with senior Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) on following a walk, sophomore Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) hit a two-run home run to put the team up 2-0. It marked Ramirez's second home run of the season. The Big Green added three more runs in the second inning off an RBI single by Kolodziej, a sacrifice fly by Ramirez and an RBI single by freshman Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).
The only trouble Gray found herself in was in the top of the sixth inning. After the first two batters reached on a single to center and a bunt single, Gray sent the next three down in order to stop the rally. She allowed only five hits in seven innings, and struck out two batters without allowing a walk.
The Big Green tallied six hits in the contest with sophomore Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) leading the team with two. Ramirez finished the game 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Dartmouth plays two games on Friday in the USF The Game Tournament. The Big Green play Florida A&M at 5:30 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast at 8 p.m.
