CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team began its second day at the University of South Florida's The Game Tournament. The Big Green began the day with a, 9-1 loss to Jacksonville and then dropped the second game, 6-5, to Quinnipiac.
Sarah Simon and Amanda Schmidt each had home runs for JU and Sarah Sigrest earned the win, allowing one run on six hits and six strikeouts in six innings of work.
Dartmouth's (3-6) Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) took the loss after surrendering six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings. Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) allowed three runs in two relief frames.
In the first inning, an infield single for JU put a runner on as a one-out hit to right field brought her home. A double two at-bats later followed with a walk loaded the bases. A two-out single to left field gave JU a 2-0 advantage, while a bases-loaded walk in the next at-bat scored another to round out the inning.
Simon made it 4-0 for JU in the second inning with a two-out homer to left center field.
The Big Green had three straight singles to start the third inning, while Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) walked to get Dartmouth's first run. Hits by Kara Curosh (Munster, ind.), Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) and Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) helped put the Big Green in scoring position before Sigrest settled down for Jacksonville and struck out the next batter while getting a line-out double play to quash the threat.
In the JU fourth inning, a single and a Schmidt home run to left field gave the Dolphins a 6-1 advantage before tallying one more in the fifth along with a two-run double in the sixth to account for the rest of the scoring.
In the Big Green's second outing of the day against Quinnipiac, the Bobcats took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Dartmouth responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, narrowing the gap by one run, 3-2.
Kolodziej started things off for the Big Green with a double to right center and then advanced to third on an illegal pitch. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) knocked a second double of the inning to bring Kolodziej home. Hubert advanced to third and then came home when Molly Khail (Seal Beach, Calif.) hit the third double of the frame.
Quinnipiac scored another run in the third inning before Hubert responded with a homerun in the bottom of the third.
Dartmouth took its first lead of the game 5-4, with two runs in the fourth inning. Alexandra St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) kept the hitting going with an extra-base hit to left field which put her on second. She advanced to third off a QU error and then came home on a sac bunt by Curosh. Singles by Everett and Kolodziej added one more.
Quinnipiac tied the game in the sixth inning and then plated the game-winning run in the seventh off a double to right field.
Barker began the game in the circle for the Big Green. She went five innings giving up just two earned runs while striking out one. Gray came on in relief, going two innings with just one earned run.
Dartmouth wraps up play at FIU with a single game against Winthrop on Sunday afternoon.
