PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — In the second and final round of the Siena College Homewood Suites played at The Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla., eight of the nine members of the Dartmouth women's golf team improved on their first-round scores, while the other golfer matched her total. The Big Green shaved 18 strokes of their team score to finish the tournament in sixth place with a 338-320—658 (+82).
Freshman Sarah Knapp (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) posted the second-lowest score of the day with a two-over 74 — 10 strokes better than on Friday — moving into a tie for ninth place with a 158 (+14). Junior co-captain Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) was five shots better, ending the tournament with carding 83-78—161 (+17) to tie for 17th overall.
Also showing improvement for Dartmouth were junior co-captain Marietta Smith (Mount Prospect, Ill.) at 85-83—168 (+24, 30th), sophomore Julie Campbell (Bozeman, Mont.) at 86-85—171 (+27, 34th) and senior Katie Gulemi (Fairfield, Conn.) at 89-85—174 (+30, 38th).
Sophomore Colleen Carroll (Bettendorf, Iowa) led the second Big Green squad competing at the invitational with a 77 on Saturday, eight strokes better than the day before, to complete the event with a 162 (+18, tied for 20th). Also participating were sophomore Emily Hyman (Chappaqua, N.Y.) with an 85-84—169 (+25, 31st), freshman Evan Sterneck (Leawood, Kan.) with an 85-85—170 (+26, tied for 32nd), and junior Kathleen Quirk (Kansas City, Mo.) with a 93-85—178 (+34, tied for 43rd).
Stetson ran away with the team title by 20 strokes, shooting a 309-302—611 (+35) in the two rounds, with Rutgers placing second. The top three individuals all came from Stetson, led by Alex Buelow at one-over 145 (73-72), three strokes ahead of teammate Lauren Cate.
The women will be back in action next Thursday and Friday at the Hilton Head Invitational in South Carolina.
