DeLAND, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team snapped a five-game losing streak with 4-3 and 6-4 wins over Stetson on Thursday in the Big Green's last two games of its spring trip. The wins give Dartmouth a 5-8 overall record.
Dartmouth jumped on the board first with a single run in the second after Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) singled up the middle to plate Alexandra St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.). The Hatters powered back with a three-run third as the next two innings featured great defense on both sides.
The Big Green took the lead back in the top of the sixth when Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) blasted a three-run home run to left field, her second of the season. The Hatters had a chance to answer with two runners on in the bottom of the frame but a flyout and a fielder's choice ended the scoring threat for the home team.
In the top of the seventh a single through the right side by Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) gave Dartmouth a chance to add more on but Meredith Owen shut the final two batters down as the Hatters came to the plate for their last chance of the game. A one-out walk was issued but the Big Green defense was able to catch her stealing before an infield groundout ended the inning for Stetson.
Everett and Adams both had two hits in the game while Barker picked up the win for the Big Green. She went the complete game, winning her third game of the year while giving up just three earned runs and striking out three.
In the nightcap, Dartmouth continued its hitting with back-to-back singles by Adams and Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) before Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) was walked to load the bases as the Big Green had its first real threat of the contest. Stetson pitcher Courtney Gunby however, shut the visitors down by striking out the next three and keeping Dartmouth off the board.
Two more singles in the third had the Big Green again looking to get the first run of the game. Khalil helped Dartmouth out when she singled up the middle scoring Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) before Ramirez popped a double to center field plating two more as the Big Green suddenly had a three-run lead. The Hatters got two back in the bottom half of the frame off an error and a sacrifice bunt but were unable to tie the score.
Khalil added another RBI to her totals in the fourth before Ramirez followed with her second double of the contest, scoring two more as Dartmouth took a 6-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh a home run and a double helped Stetson cut into the Big Green's lead but it wasn't enough as Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) came on in relief and got the final two batters to ground out as Dartmouth came away the victory and the doubleheader sweep.
Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) earned the win as she went 6.1 innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts. Everett and Khalil each went three-for-four while Adams was two-for-four with two runs and two RBIs.
The Big Green comes back to the Northeast and will be back in action on March 30 in a doubleheader at UMass.
