Lightweight Crew Opens Season with Wins over Delaware

Lake Lillinonah, Conn. - The Dartmouth men's lightweight crew team opened the 2011 campaign against Delaware, winning three of five races including the varsity eight.

The races were contested on Lake Lillinonah in Connecticut, with a tail wind and floating starts.

Dartmouth's varsity eight moved to 1-0 on the season, defeating Delaware's varsity by nine seconds flat. The Big Green crossed the finish in 6:00.3 ahead of the Blue Hens in 6:09.3.

The Big Green also won the second varsity eight race in convincing fashion with a time of 6:02.5 ahead of Delaware in 6:16.6. Dartmouth's third win of the day came in the freshman four race, which the Big Green's A boat won in 7:12.2, ahead of a second Dartmouth board in 7:24.0. Delaware was third in 7:30.0.

The novice eight race actually provided the most fireworks on the day as Delaware edged Dartmouth by 0.3 seconds, crossing in 6:05.4 to the Big Green's time of 6:05.7. Delaware also won the third varsity eight race in 6:14.4 ahead of Dartmouth in 6:36.1.

Dartmouth is back on the water on Saturday, April 16 when it heads to Boston to face Harvard and MIT for the Biglin Bowl.
