HANOVER, N.H. - The Class of 1984 Plaque regatta had its share of rescheduling, but ultimately the races were contested early Saturday morning, with #1 Princeton taking the varsity race and Dartmouth finishing second.
Due to rain, snow and wind in the Upper Valley, the crews raced some events on Friday evening before finishing the regatta early Saturday morning. There was a tail current and slight headwind for the main varsity races on Saturday.
#1 Princeton showed its mettle on Saturday morning, winning the varsity eight race in a time of 5:54.0 ahead of Dartmouth in 6:03.5. The Big Green was nearly 10 seconds faster than Penn in third with a time of 6:13.1.
Also contested on Saturday morning were the second varsity eight and the varsity four. Princeton won the second varsity in a time of 6:03.2 while Dartmouth and Penn had a very close finish for second place, which again went to the Green in 6:12.8. Penn was just 0.6 seconds behind, crossing in 6:13.4.
The varsity four race was hotly contested on Friday night before Penn and Princeton collided with one meter to go. The crews chose to re-run the race on Saturday morning. This time, Princeton won in 6:47.7 with Penn second in 6:51.0 and Dartmouth third in 6:56.1.
On Friday, Princeton also won the third varsity eight race in 5:59.4 with Penn taking second in 6:08.4 and Dartmouth third in 6:14.2. Princeton and Penn competed in a second varsity four race, which also went to the Tigers.
Dartmouth heads to Cornell next Saturday to take on the Big Red.
