ZURICH — Dartmouth head coach Mark Hudak helped lead the U.S. Women's National Team to its third straight world championship at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championship at Hallenstadion on Monday.
Hudak was an assistant coach on the U.S. Team that defeated Team Canada, 3-2, in overtime of the gold-medal game. Hilary Knight scored the game-winning goal at 7:48 of the extra session, while Jessie Vetter made 51 saves in the championship-winning effort. Team USA finished the tournament with a 5-0 record to capture the gold medal for the fourth time in the last five world championships.
Two former Big Green skaters, Cherie Piper '07 and Gillian Apps '07, were a part of the silver-medal team from Canada. Apps scored Team Canada's first goal in the gold-medal game, and Piper finished the tournament with four points on three goals and an assist. Apps finished the championship with two goals.
