PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth women's hockey continued its stretch of five straight road games in Providence, taking on the #13 Brown Bears.
The Big Green and Bears played evenly through the first half of the first period, but a late period Brown goal set Dartmouth back as the Bears went on to earn the 4-0 victory. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 2-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell liked the start her team got. "First ten minutes I thought we played well, controlled the play a little bit," Crowell said. Brown took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission thanks to a goal with 2:30 to play.
"[The Bears] got their goal late in the first and that kind of put us on our heels. So, we're adjusting to being in the hole and how to bounce back from that."
Special teams play controlled the second period as the Big Green committed two penalties and the Bears one. There was four-on-four play, and both traditional five-on-four penalty kills and power play opportunities. Neither team was able to convert on the advantage, but the Bears tallied two in the middle frame, taking a 3-0 lead into the final period.
The third period was the Big Green's best period. They outshot the Bears 12-7 and played as a unit.
"We played more like a team, worked together, kept it simple," Crowell said. "When you get in a hole and people try to push and press, you open things up. And Brown did a good job of exposing us on some of those odd man rushes. So those are areas we want to tidy up but I liked the way we played in the third. I liked our work ethic, our simplicity."
The Big Green were unable to find the back of the net in the third period, despite a five-on-three power play opportunity late, something Crowell says is an area her team will continue to grow in as more situations arise.
Brown was able to add one more goal, this time on the power play, to make it a 4-0 game. This is the first power play goal the Big Green have allowed in four games, dating back to October 25 vs. Cornell. Until they allowed a power play goal in the third period, the Big Green were 14-for-14.
"Hopefully we can do a better job of staying out of the box. But, in general, it's really important to have a good pk," Crowell said. "So proud of the way those guys played regardless of the scoreboard."
Dartmouth is back in action Saturday, taking on the #10 Yale Bulldogs in New Haven before a week off. Yale has won the last 15 matchups against the Big Green.
Crowell said the focus for her team on Saturday is "doing more of what we did in the third period [Friday], using everybody. We had some great depth players step up big. I thought that helped us play the way we wanted to play. So, playing together, using everybody and having a better showing for 60 to 65 minutes, if needed."
Puck drop against the Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 15. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
