HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's track and field team recently announced the 2010-11 team awards and the captains for next season.
The captains for next year will be sophomore Connor Reilly (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and juniors Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) and John Turro (Katonah, N.Y.).
The Everett L. Palmer Track Prize, which is given to the athlete who contributed most to the track program during the year as determined by the coaching staff, was given to senior thrower David Irving (Manchester, N.H.). Irving earned second team All-Ivy during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He earned the honor during the indoor season by placing second in the weight throw at the Indoor Ivy Championship. At Outdoor Heps, Irving took second in the hammer throw to earn his All-Ivy status. The senior also qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the hammer throw.
The Nathan D. Bugbee 1925 Memorial Track Prize, which is presented annually to one member of each of the men's and women's track squads, who according to fellow team members, best exemplifies the characteristics of good team sportsmanship, team spirit, camaraderie, and overall dedication to the sport and who demonstrates respect for team members, opponent and officials, was awarded to senior Tyler Ford (Penfield, N.Y.).
The Carl J. Wallin Coach's Awards went to senior Chris Fletcher (Annapolis, Md.) and senior Chris Roe (Berwyn, Pa.).
The Outstanding Freshman Award went to Steve Mangan (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.). He took sixth at the Outdoor Heptagonals in the 1,500 meters.
The Leon E. Lovejoy Track Prize, which is presented to the member of the team, who in the opinion of the Dartmouth College Athletic Department and the coaches of the track team, has done the most in sportsmanship and competition to uphold the interest of Dartmouth College, was awarded to freshman Josh Cyphers (Grantham, N.H.).
The Paul S. Harmon Distance Runner Award, which is given to the member of the senior class who is a distance or cross country runner and who, in the opinion of the track coaches and Director of Athletics, has shown the greatest improvement in track athletics during his college course, was awarded to senior Tom Robbins (Evanston, Ill.). Robbins qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 1,500 meters and earned a spot on the USTFCCA all-region team.
The Cahners Award, which is presented to a Dartmouth senior who has distinguished himself in the field of hammer throwing, was given to Irving.
The Herb E. Chase Award, which is presented to the athlete who in the opinion of the coaching staff, has made the greatest improvement in their event through hard work, self-discipline and enthusiasm for track and field, was given to senior Joe Lonek (Epping, N.H.) and Shaw.
Dartmouth gave out one outstanding achievement award, which is given to an individual that sets a school record during the season. Reilly broke his own school record, during the indoor season, in the 60 meters with a time of 6.84.
The Big Green also gave out six outstanding accomplishment awards, which are given to an individual who won a championship or qualified for the regional meet. All six honorees of the outstanding accomplishment honor garnered the award by qualifying for the regional meet: Irving in the hammer throw, Roe in the javelin, senior Dan Ostrovsky (Wellesley, Mass.) in the javelin, Shaw in the 10,000 meters, Robbins in the 1,500 meters and Royer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
