HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's indoor track & field team narrowly edged out Maine Saturday afternoon at Leverone Field House, 64-62, to win Saturday's quad meet which also featured Vermont and Rensselaer.
The Big Green sealed the win with a first-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay at the end of the day. Dartmouth edged out Vermont in the event by just under two seconds, finishing in 8:02.49 to the Catamounts' 8:04.36.
Sophomore John Bleday's personal-best time of 8:16.06 in the 3000 meters helped lead a contingent of Dartmouth runners to the top four spots and five of the first seven in the event. Junior Matt Miner was second in 8:23.29.
In the 200 meters, sophomore Jalil Bishop took the top spot, posting a 22.87. The Big Green had four of the top-10 places in the race as freshman Brett Buskey also finished in the scoring for the home team. Bishop also ran to a second-place finish in the 400 meters in 51.27.
The finals of the 60-meter dash saw junior Tyrone DeSpenza place second (7.00) after qualifying first in the preliminaries. Buskey was third in the finals in 7:05. DeSpenza also was the Big Green's top competitor in the men's long jump. His mark of 20-7.25/6.28m was good for third.
Sophomore Will Geoghegan and junior Will Callan helped the home team's cause on Saturday as they finished first (2:30.84) and second (2:33.13), respectively, in the 1000 meters.
After qualifying first in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, junior Jacob Evanter earned the top spot in the finals, running a 8.45 to beat out RPI's David Kastner's 8.46 in the closest finish of the afternoon.
For the second week in a row, sophomore Dom Filiano won the shot put at Leverone. Saturday saw the Big Green thrower earn the top spot with a mark of 51-11.75/15.84m. Dartmouth's Tom Vorhies (44-5.5/13.55m) and Brett Gilson (40-2.25/12.25m) were the fourth- and fifth-place finishers in the event as well.
