HANOVER, N.H. - For the third week in a row, the Dartmouth men's indoor track & field team took first place in a home meet. And for the third consecutive week, the victory came by the slimmest of margins.
The Big Green finished Saturday's meet with just a two-point advantage over second-place Columbia, 62-60. Yale was third with 46 points. Dartmouth edged out Vermont a week ago by two points, 64-62, while taking first by just seven against UMass-Lowell in the Dartmouth Relays.
The freshmen tandem of Grant Sparling (Blyth, Ontario) and Sam Yoder (North Attleboro, Mass.) did their part as they finished first and second, respectively, in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. Sparling took first in 8.66, while Yoder's time of 8.78 earned him three points.
The same strong showing could also be said true of the trio of juniors Connor Reilly (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Tyrone DeSpenza (New Orleans, La.) and freshman Brett Buskey (Blackstone, Mass.) in the 60-meter dash. The three Big Green sprinters claimed the top spots with Reilly leading the way in 7.00. DeSpenza was second in 7.06, while Buskey's 7.09 rounded out the Dartmouth scoring in the finals of the event.
Buskey also earned points in the 200 meters, finishing third in 23.17. DeSpenza was second in the long jump with a distance of 20-1.75/6.14m early in the afternoon.
Yoder took home first in the high jump in an event held later in the afternoon. His mark of 6-5.50/1.97m just beat out teammate and fellow freshman Jeremy Birck (Libertyville, Ill.), who finished second with a height of 6-2.25/1.89m. Sophomore Ben Nollet (Storrs, Conn.) was third at 6-0.50/1.84m.
In the mile, sophomore Henry Sterling (South Freeport, Maine) placed third in a very close race. His 4:12.10 was just four seconds back of first-place John Gregorek of Columbia and half a second behind Yale's Tim Hillas.
In the weight throw, reigning DartmouthSports.com Male Athlete of the Week sophomore Dom Filiano (Lebanon, N.H.) was third with a distance of 49-6.50/15.10m. Junior Tom Vorhies (Rockaway, N.J.) was fourth with a throw of 46-3.5/14.11m.
Filiano bounced back from the weight throw to win the shot put for the third time in three weeks with a mark of 49-9.75/15.18m; more than two feet farther than Vorhies' mark of 47-0.25/14.33m to claim second.
Sophomore Josh Cyphers (Grantham, N.J.) was third in the pole vault, clearing 14-3.25/4.35m on his second attempt at the height.
Dartmouth will finally leave the friendly confines of Leverone for its fourth competition of the season, running next weekend at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. The two-day meet is set to begin on Friday.
