WEDNESDAY'S GAME
The Big Green got back on the right track Saturday afternoon
with a 4-3 victory against Ivy League foe Yale. The win was the first against
Yale since 2005 and the first at home vs. the Bulldogs since 2002. But, it was
much more than just snapping a six-game skid to the Elis, the one-goal win was
the third straight against conference opponents and keeps the team in a tie for
second place in the standings at 3-1.
STICK IT TO CANCER
Wednesday's game is also going to be played in remembrance
of Vermont's Stirling Winder and part of the national Stick it to Cancer
campaign. Winder is a former Catamount field hockey player who passed away in
July after a courageous battle with osteosarcoma bone cancer.
There will be "Stirling Strong" t-shirts and bracelets for sale with proceeds
going to Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Stirling A. Winder Fund.
SCOUTING THE
CATAMOUNTS
It's been a rough go of it in 2012 for Vermont as the team
comes to Hanover with a 1-13 record. After starting the season 0-8, the team
finally got a 'W' with 1-0 win over Siena at home on Sept. 23. However, that
has been the lone bright spot this fall as the Catamounts have dropped their
last five since, including a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Yale Sunday in
Burlington. Whitlee Burghardt gave her team a 2-1 lead with just 3:22
remaining, but a Bulldogs' goal with 27 seconds left was followed by an OT
winner 2:40 into the extra session for the heartbreaking loss. Alana Izzo leads
the team with 10 points and four assists, while Kelsey Bonner has a team-best
four goals. Stephanie Zygmunt has started all 14 games, posting a 3.55
goals-against average and a .738 save percentage.
SAVAGE SCORES
For the first time this season, sophomore Ali Savage
(Orange, New South Wales, Australia) found the back of the goal twice in a game
when she scored twice against Yale. Her two goals came just 3:04 apart and put
her team up 4-1 headed into half time. It was her first multi-goal game since
netting a hat trick last season against Bryant on Sept. 18, 2011.
LAST TIME AGAINST
VERMONT
These two teams last met on Sept. 28, 2011 with the
Catamounts picking up the 4-3 home win in Burlington. Savage scored and
assisted on another, as did Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Kelly Hood '12,
but it wasn't enough to overcome a late Vermont goal with 54 seconds remaining
to pick up the win.
FINE FIRST HALF
For just the second time this season, Dartmouth found the
back of the goal four times in the first half on Saturday. The four first-half
tallies equaled the Big Green's output against Bryant in the first 35 minutes
of action on Sept. 19. The team's best offensive output for a half this season
came when it scored five times in the second at Holy Cross on Sept. 23.
LEADERBOARD
Masini's goal and assist against the Bulldogs mean she is
not only the team's leader in overall points with 18, but she also leads the
team in both goals (7) and assists (4) in her final season with the team. She
redirected a Liz Blanken (Short Hills, N.J.) shot on a corner and set up
Savage's first of the day with a long centering feed to go along with solid
play in the midfield against Yale.
GETTING IT STARTED
Senior Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.) got the scoring started for Dartmouth,
knocking home a loose ball in the low circle to put her team up 1-0. The goal
was her second of the season with both coming at home (Bryant).
WHAT'S AHEAD?
After Wednesday's non-conference tilt, the Big Green will
head out for just its second Ivy League road game of the season. Dartmouth will
square off with Columbia in New York Sunday at noon.
