NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) snapped a five-game scoring drought with a third-period goal to become the 36th member of Dartmouth's 100-point club Friday night at Yale's Ingalls Rink. The goal pulled the Big Green to within one, but the Bulldogs held on for the 5-3 ECAC Hockey victory.
The win was the 10th straight for Yale (11-13-2, 8-10-1 ECAC Hockey) over Dartmouth (9-13-4, 6-10-3 ECAC Hockey) dating back to 2008. The Elis also swept the season series, 3-0, over the Big Green with the first two coming by just one goal.
The loss pushed Dartmouth's current winless stretch to seven games (0-5-2).
Freshman Brandon McNally (Saugus, Mass.) and senior Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) also netted tallies in the game.
Senior Paul Lee (Garden City, N.Y.) picked up an assist on McNally's seventh of the season. The game was the 100th of his career, becoming the fifth senior this season to reach the century mark in games played.
McNally scored the first Dartmouth goal of the night 6:52 into the second period, knocking in a centering feed from Lee at the top of the crease to tie the game at 1-1. The tie didn't last long as Yale's Brian O'Neill answered with his 18th of the season just 54 seconds later to regain the one-goal advantage.
With 3:45 left in the middle stanza, Connor Goggin once again pulled Dartmouth even with Yale. He and McNally put together a beautiful passing play that began in the defensive zone along the halfboards and ended with Coggin delaying just a split second to pull Bulldogs' netminder Nick Maricic out of position to finish with a high wrister just under the crossbar.
Lee collected his second assist of the night on Goggin's fourth of the season.
Jesse Root and Kevin Peel gave Yale a 4-2 lead less than five minutes into the third as both finished one-timers on separate power plays early in the period.
Jones' eighth goal of the season pulled Dartmouth back to within one as his wrist shot from the high slot on a rush found space between the blocker and torso of Maricic. Already tied for 10th all-time in assists in program history with 74, the goal was the 26th of Jones' career to finally push him over the 100-point mark. His last point came on a first-period assist against the Bulldogs in Hanover on Jan. 28.
Senior Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ontario) and sophomore Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) picked up helpers on Jone's goal. Robinson and Jones are now tied for the team lead with 18 points apiece.
An empty-net power-play goal by Peel in the final minute sealed the win, 5-3. Kenny Agostino had the first goal of the night for the Bulldogs 16:47 into the game.
Senior goaltender James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) finished the contest with 23 saves, while Maricic had 27 at the other end of the ice.
Dartmouth was 0-for-7 with the power play in the game, while Yale converted on three of its seven opportunities on the night, with all three coming in the final period.
The Big Green will head up the road to take on Brown in Providence Saturday night. Dartmouth is 7-0-1 in its last eight games against the Bears. Game time from Meehan Auditorium is set for 7 p.m.
NOTES: The game was the second of the season on the NBC Sports Network for the Big Green. Dartmouth defeated RPI, 4-3, on Jan. 6 on the road in the first college hockey game broadcast on the newly incarnated network...McNally's second-period marker not only was his third in as many games, but was the third-straight Dartmouth goal dating back to last Friday's game against Union. Assisting on Goggin's goal gave him a point on four straight team goals...After dressing seven defensemen in the last outing with RPI, Dartmouth was back to a traditional lineup as Charlie Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Mark Goggin (Glen, Ellyn, Ill.) were reinserted on the third line...Dartmouth has not won on the road against Yale since Feb. 17, 2007.
