December 2011 - MEN'S ICE HOCKEY AT CHaD
By Matt Oatway, Jaeger Civic Intern
While other Dartmouth students were home for the long winter break between the fall and winter terms, the Dartmouth Men's Ice Hockey team was on campus working hard to get their season started on the right track. During the long break, the team took some time for their annual trip to the CHaD (Children's Hospital at Dartmouth) Wing at DHMC (Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center) to deliver Christmas gifts to patients who were hospitalized during the holiday season.
In the lead up to the trip, the team held toy drives at their games to collect toys for the kids. The Womens Basketball team also hosted a toy drive at one of their games to collect toys for the trip. After the toy drive, the team delivered the gifts to the children while decked out in their Dartmouth sweaters.
According to senior goalie James Mello, the wing was not filled to capacity, which gave the team an opportunity to spend quality time with the kids who were there and help out in some other ways. Mello said, "We were really happy that there weren't a lot of kids there because it meant that they were healthy enough to make it home for the holidays". The team still kept busy during their time though by helping to disinfect all of the toys and do some other needed maintenance. Additionally, the team worked with some of the patients to make ornaments for Christmas trees and other decorations to hang up in the CHaD wing.
