January 2012 - DCAD AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS
By Matt Oatway, Jaeger Civic Intern
This year, over 100 Dartmouth Student Athletes from multiple teams joined dozens of other Dartmouth Students at the annual Winter Special Olympics, held at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme, NH. While the Olympians competed in events ranging from downhill skiing to snowshoeing, to cross country skiing, Dartmouth student athletes were on hand to act as marshals, cheerleaders, and support staff. Some athletes volunteered individually, but many teams took the opportunity to volunteer together. The Women's Rowing team, Men's and Women's Lacrosse teams, Women's Golf Team, and Football team all volunteered as groups. For the teams, volunteering at the Special Olympics is a great way to work together off of the field of play while doing well for others. Many athletes enjoyed interacting with Dartmouth Dining Services employees who were competing in the games that they knew from their time in the dining hall.
