HANOVER, N.H. - In the lone home meet of the spring, the Dartmouth men's track & field team came to compete. Five first-place finishes in field events and another four on the track helped the Big Green earn 79 team points to best the three other teams on hand at Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.
Vermont and Middlebury sent full squads to Hanover, while Brandeis was represented in several events.
"We only have one home meet, so our hope is that it goes as smoothly as possible," head coach Barry Harwick said. "In the field events, a couple of our throwers had phenomenal days. Brett Gilson had his best day ever which should get him into the NCAA Regionals, TJ Servino qualified for Junior Nationals in the hammer throw with a lifetime PR and Sam Yoder was great in the high jump as well.
"On the track, we also had a great day, even with some of our top runners not competing. We ran away with the team score thanks to performances from Connor Reilly in the 100 and Brett Buskey in the 200," Harwick continued. "Joseph Woiwode led wire-to-wire in the 800 and ran just a great race."
Gilson's 210-11.0/64.29m toss on his fourth attempt in the javelin was that personal best, while Servino's toss of 176-10/53.90m earned him a first-place showing in the hammer and came on his fifth throw of the morning.
Buskey claimed first and the five points in the 200 with a 22.18 finish. In the 100, Reilly fought wind (-2.0) and still managed to post a first-place showing with an impressive 10.93, a figure that the coaches expressed would have been even better were it not for the wind.
Woiwode, a sophomore, stepped up in the 800, leading throughout the race en route to a time of 1:55.47 to take the top spot.
Yoder cleared six feet in the high jump, earning first with a height of 6-8.0/2.03m.
"Across the board I was happy with how things went, but I told the entire team after the meet today that now is the point in our season where they have to be on their game both athletically and academically," Harwick added. "We are going to be away from campus for the next few weeks an awful lot and that means they have to focus on those two aspects.
"The good news is that we are starting to see the team start to enjoy their successes and I know that is going to translate to us putting more points on the board in those upcoming meets."
Two meets will start that long road next weekend as part of the team will head to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut Calif., while other members will go back to Princeton for the Larry Ellis Invitational. The California meet begins Thursday, while those running at Princeton will be competition on Friday.
