ITHACA, N.Y. – After falling to Columbia in a close four-set match the night before, the Dartmouth volleyball team returned to the court the following day with a vengeance, defeating Cornell in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-20. The Big Green improved to 12-4 on the season and 3-2 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red dipped to 3-12 and remain winless in conference action with a record of 0-5.
“I am very proud of how the team responded after last night's loss at Columbia,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “We improved not only individually, but in how we play together as a team. We had a great performance from senior Alex Schoenberger, who has just started playing the middle position for us due to some injuries, and she brought so much hard work and communication to the court. Our setters also did an excellent job running a very balanced offense.”
The Green and White took control right from the beginning of the set, winning the first point off an error and going on a four-point rally courtesy of three errors on the other side of the net and a kill by Schoenberger. For the entirety of the set, the Big Green remained comfortably ahead of the Big Red, getting as far as 10 points in front near the end of the match. An error by the opponent allowed the team from the Upper Valley to earn its 24th point, but it was held at match point while Cornell earned three straight points off two errors and a kill, but a kill by senior Lucia Pohlman gave Dartmouth its 25th to end the set.
Dartmouth's first five points of the second set came from Cornell errors, and a total of 13 errors would occur on the other side of the net before the set was completed. Leading the way in kills was Lujan with three, while Schoenberger, Caridi and sophomore Emily Astarita each had two.
The Big Green, once again, took advantage of the opponents' errors, taking an early two-point lead at the beginning of the third set because of them. The score, however, remained a lot closer than in the previous two sets. With a score of 13-12 in favor of Cornell, a kill apiece by Caridi, Schoenberger and sophomore Emily Patrick put Dartmouth back in the lead, but the Big Red were never far behind. A kill by Caridi took the score to 24-18, but the team was held at match point while Cornell got two points closer off errors. A final kill by Astarita neatly wrapped the match up.
For the second night in a row, Caridi led in kills with 10, while Astarita was a close second with nine. Sophomore Stacey Benton had 22 assists and Patrick had a team-leading 14 digs.
Dartmouth will return to action next weekend with two more Ivy League matches. On Friday, Oct. 17, the Big Green will host Princeton at 5 p.m. and, the following day will welcome Penn to town for a 5 p.m. match.
