HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman Anna Ewasechko tied the game as regulation expired and senior Ali Savage scored 2:04 into overtime to give the Dartmouth field hockey team a come-from-behind victory over visiting non-conference Holy Cross, 5-4, Monday afternoon at Chase Field.
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 4-7 overall heading into an Ivy League showdown with Yale on Saturday. The Crusaders dropped their overall record to 3-12 with the defeat.
Ewasechko's game-tying goal as time expired was also the first tally of her career.
"We fought through a lot of adversity today to pick up the win," head coach Amy Fowler said. "We are missing players due to injuries and everyone who was playing a different role stepped up. This game was a character builder and shows that we can play through different situations. There are a lot of positives to take out of today's game."
The overtime winner was Savage's second this season, as the Big Green forced overtime in the waning seconds of regulation. Earlier this season, Savage scored in extra time against Bryant at home on Sept. 28, and now has three in her career.
With the overtime triumph, Fowler (126-128) tied Mary Corrigan (1975-92) as Dartmouth's all-time winningest coach with 126 career victories.
In the overtime period, the Big Green found themselves with their second extra-man advantage after a yellow card was assessed to a Holy Cross player 1:37 into the extra session. Dartmouth quickly set up and wasted little time before senior Janine Leger found Savage for the game-winner on a shot from 10 yards away that was blasted into the left corner.
The home team was able to get into the overtime after having its back against the wall in the final minutes of play. The Green were rewarded with a green card and a penalty corner as time expired that allowed them to force overtime. With the scoreboard showing all zeroes, Savage sent a sweep over to junior Brooke Van Valkenburg, who stick handled and passed off to Ewasechko for the equalizer.
Dartmouth held a 3-2 lead with 27:08 left in the second on a successful penalty stroke by freshman Anna Rowthorn-Apel. Holy Cross' Kaitlyn Murray answered with her own penalty stroke to tie the contest, 3-3, with 25:43 left. The Crusaders then took their second lead of the game with 8:15 remaining on a shot by Maureen Connolly.
Holy Cross took an early lead in the seventh minute of play with Connolly's first marker of the day. Dartmouth answered with consecutive goals to take a 2-1 advantage heading into the intermission. Junior Clare Detrick-Yee and sophomore Heather Zezzo each scored for the Big Green in the first half. Leger and Savage were credited with the helpers on the penalty corner goal by Detrick-Yee and freshman Julia Donald picked up the assist on Zezzo's goal.
Like Ewasechko, Detrick-Yee also netted the first marker of her career in the contest.
It didn't take long for the Crusaders to tie the game early in the second on a rebound goal by Rachel Lapar. Dartmouth outshot Holy Cross, 12-7, in the final frame after the visitors doubled-up the Big Green in the first, 12-6.
Both sides registered 19 shots apiece, while the visitors held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners. Senior Ellen Meyer made seven saves in picking up the win, while Holy Cross used a pair of keepers with Maya Langman being saddled with the loss after she replaced Kat Matchett at the half. Langman stopped five of the eight shots she faced.
Dartmouth and Yale begin Saturday's Homecoming festivities at 12 p.m.
