Kipouras and Sakinis Move on to Doubles Semifinals at Regionals

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Back in action at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for day three of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship on Sunday, the Dartmouth men's tennis team produced strong results once again. Senior Chris Kipouras, junior Dovydas Sakinis and freshman Ciro Riccardi represented the Big Green in both doubles and singles, going 3-1 overall.

“It's nice to see Dovydas and Chris playing some really solid doubles,” head coach Chris Drake said. “They played great in the first match and then fought their way through some imperfect tennis in the second match of the day.”

Sakinis and Kipouras opened the day with an 8-4 victory over Stefan Vinti and Colin Sinclair from Cornell in the Round of 16. Advancing to the quarterfinals, the duo had a closer match against St. John's players Robert Livi and R.J. Del Nunzio, winning by a score of 8-7(1).

Sakinis and Riccardi competed in the Round of 16 for singles, both facing players from Columbia. Continuing on his undefeated streak, Sakinis fell in the first set, 2-6, but won the final two, 6-1, 6-1 to take the match against Eric Rubin. Facing Ashok Naravana, Riccari had a 7-6, 6-4 loss.

“In singles, Ciro served for the first set and had a chance to get it but Ashok is an experienced, tough player and you need to execute well throughout to beat him. Dovydas overcame some early nerves and really raised his level of the last two sets. It will be fun to see us meet some tough challenges tomorrow.”

Monday's schedule includes the semifinals of doubles and both the quarterfinals and semifinals of singles. Finals of both draws are scheduled for Tuesday.
