Men's Tennis Returns to Action with 7-0 Win over Buffalo

HANOVER, N.H. – No. 47 Dartmouth men's tennis team opened 2015 with a 7-0 victory over Buffalo on Saturday at the Boss Tennis Center.

The match began with the Big Green sweeping the three doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. The 22nd-ranked team of senior Chris Kipouras and junior Dovydas Sakinis were the first to finish, winning their match by a score of 6-0. Junior Brendan Tannenbaum and freshman Aman Agarwal won 6-1 to clinch the doubles point for Dartmouth, while junior Diego Pedraza and freshman Ciro Riccardi closed out the doubles by scoring a 6-2 victory.

Freshman Max Fliegner put the Big Green up 2-0 by winning his singles match 7-6, 6-4, over Buffalo's Akhil Mehta. A few minutes later, Riccardi closed out his win over Jonathan Hannestad, 6-2, 7-5, to move Dartmouth to within one point of victory. Sakinis, ranked 65th nationally, clinched the match by securing a 7-5, 6-3 win over Damien David.

“This was definitely the toughest team I have scheduled for our opening match in my five seasons at Dartmouth,” said head coach Chris Drake. “Buffalo is coached very well, and they compete extremely hard at every position."

Kipouras added another point for the Big Green by defeating Sebastian Ionescu 7-6, 7-5. Tannenbaum scored a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Sergio Arevalillo and Pedraza closed out the match with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Pablo Alvarez.

“I told the team that this was a good first step, a positive beginning to our season,” added Drake. “I am proud of the way our guys were able to execute their games at the end of some very close sets.”

The 47th-ranked Big Green will conclude their double-header with a match against Bryant that is scheduled to begin at 5pm.
