Hanover, N.H. – Thompson Arena
THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will officially open the 2014-15 regular season on Sunday when it hosts New Hampshire.
SEASON OPENER
Since head coach Mark Hudak took over the program in 2003, the Big Green have gone 7-4 in season-opening games. Just over a year ago, Dartmouth opened its 2013-14 tilt in Massachusetts, suffering a 7-2 loss to No. 2 Boston College.
LAST TIME OUT
The team started its campaign last Saturday night at Thompson Arena with a 4-2 exhibition win against visiting McGill. Dartmouth got out to a quick start when Lindsey Allen netted the first goal at 2:23 of the opening period and, after McGill's Leslie Oles scored the Martlets' first goal nine minutes into the middle stanza, the Green responded with three goals in the span of 1:19. Kennedy Ottenbreit broke the tie at 14:10, only to see Mackenzie St. Onge and Samantha Zeiss pocket two more shortly thereafter. Between the pipes, Robyn Chemago stopped 15 shots.
SCOUTING UNH
Even though Dartmouth is just starting its season, the Wildcats are well underway with theirs, having kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 loss at Maine on Sept. 27. New Hampshire had back-to-back losses at Ohio State over the weekend of Oct. 4 before claiming a 1-0 victory at Rochester Institute of Technology on Oct. 10. This past weekend, the Wildcats defeated Rensselaer, 2-1, in their home opener on Friday before falling to Boston College by a score of 4-0 the following day.
DARTMOUTH vs. NEW HAMPSHIRE
Dartmouth is 14-36-3 all-time against New Hampshire and 7-8-1 under Hudak. The last time the two teams met, the Wildcats posted a 2-1 victory over the Big Green on home ice. The team from the Upper Valley scored first, as Allen found the back of the net on a power play nine minutes into the first period. Twenty minutes later and halfway through the second stanza, the Wildcats would tie it up. With the score knotted at one midway through the third period, UNH scored its second goal that turned out to be the game-winner. In the final period, the Big Green outshot the opponents and Chemago turned away a career-best 33 shots.
HUDAK AND COMPANY
Having led the Big Green women's hockey team since the 2003-04 season, Hudak has compiled a record of 205-109-28 in his 11 seasons. His accomplishments with the team include two Ivy League titles, two ECAC Tournament titles, one ECAC regular season title, six NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four showings. On the bench, Hudak is joined by associate head coach Holley Tyng, who is entering her 10th season with the team, and assistant coach Josh Liegl, who returns to the Big Green coaching staff for his third year.
CAPTAINS
The Green and White are led by captain Karlee Odland, and alternate captains Morgan Illikainen and Catherine Berghuis. This is the first time since the 2010-11 season that just one player will wear the 'C'. Odland appeared in 23 games last season, registering 13 points on four goals and nine assists. Illikainen appeared in all 30 games and had five helpers as a junior, while Berghuis scored three goals and had 10 points in her second season with the team.
O CANADA
Back in August, junior Laura Stacey was one of 22 players named to Canada's National Development Team and was given the opportunity to compete in a three-game series against the United States Women's Under-22 National Team.
BACK AT IT!
Junior Lindsay Allen led the Big Green last season with 14 goals and nine assists to total 23 points. Against McGill on Saturday, Allen scored the first goal at 2:23 in the opening period.
THAT'S MY NET!
Chemago will debut this season as the Green's starting goalie, succeeding Lindsay Holdcroft, who graduated this past June. During her senior campaign, Holdcroft had an impressive 645 saves with a .906 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average. Chemago's career numbers throughout one year with the team are: 4 GP/ 4 GS, 236:56 minutes, 12 GA, 3.06 GAA, 114 saves, .905 save percentage.
FRESH FACES
Four freshmen were added to the roster for the upcoming season. The talented group consists of forwards Brooke Ahbe, Elena Horton and Morgan Turner and defenseman Hailey Noronha. Ahbe was selected to the United States U18 National team that won silver at the U18 World Championships in Hungary this past year, while Noronha was a two-time member of the Canada U18 National Team that won gold in Budapest in March. Horton and Turner's teams have both played at the USA National Championships.
LAST SEASON
Eventual national champion Clarkson swept Dartmouth out of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals, 2-0. The Big Green ended their season with an overall record of 9-20-1 and 8-13-1 in conference play.
NEXT UP FOR DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth has a packed schedule coming up. The team will play 29 games in all throughout the 2014-15 season, hosting 15 and hitting the road for 14. After facing New Hampshire, the Green will host Union in a 7 p.m. Halloween ECAC Hockey matchup.
