TUESDAY'S GAME
The Dartmouth field hockey team will travel to Orono to take on Maine Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a mid-week road matinee. The Big Green will look to build on its three-game win streak after completing a sweep of its recent homestand.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green jumped out to an early four-goal lead and held on for a 5-3 win Saturday afternoon at home against Penn in an Ivy League contest. Senior Ali Savage and freshman Anna Rowthorn-Apel each netted a pair in the first half and senior Janine Leger tacked on an insurance marker late in the game as Dartmouth downed the Quakers at home for the fifth straight time dating back to 2006.
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
Maine comes into the game with a 5-6 overall record thanks to a three-game win streak of its own. In each victory, the Black Bears have held opponents to just one goal, while their own offense has averaged four, besting Quinnipiac (4-1), Vermont (5-1) and Sacred Heart (3-1) in the process. The trio of sophomore Danielle Aviani (7g/2a – 16pts) and seniors Annabelle Hamilton (4g/6a – 14pts) and Holly Stewart (6g/1a- 13pts) lead the team offensively, while goalkeeping duties have been split between freshman Emily Corbet (2-4/2.51GAA) and Emma Corchran (3-2/1.09GAA).
AGAINST MAINE
The Big Green have been given fits by the Black Bears in recent years as Maine has won the last four meetings. Dartmouth's most recent victory in the series came back in the 2007 season opener on Aug. 31 in Hanover. That outing ended in the home team's favor, but needed overtime before the 3-2 final was decided.
FIRST HALF AT HOME
In the recent three-game homestand, Dartmouth scored 10 goals in the opening 35 minutes of action. Included in that figure were five tallies in the opening half against Brown, one against Bryant and another four this past weekend against Penn. Also in that stretch, the Green had just three second-half markers — one in each game — and an OT winner against the Bulldogs.
ROWTHORN-APEL ON THE STROKE
The freshman from Bethesda, Maryland, has three goals this season with two coming via the penalty stroke. After her first career marker came via a penalty stroke against Brown on Sept. 27, she was called on again for her first of two tallies against Penn on Saturday. Rowthorn-Apel beat the Quakers' goalkeeper in the 30th minute on the stroke before batting a loose ball out of mid-air into an open netmouth less than two minutes later for her second of the game.
SAVED ON THE LINE
Thanks to quick thinking by junior Clare Detrick-Yee, Dartmouth was able to avoid allowing a Penn goal early in the second half of play. Detrick-Yee made a defensive save – her team-leading second of the season — on Emily Corcoran to keep her team in front, something that would prove vital later in the contest. To this point in the season, the Big Green are tied with Columbia for the league lead with seven defensive saves each, with Dartmouth reaching the number in two fewer games. Yale and Brown are the next closest with four apiece, while the Green's opponents have managed just one against them this fall.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
Dartmouth will once again be home for three straight starting this weekend. Albany comes to Hanover for a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday, while Holy Cross will be here on Columbus Day at 3 p.m. Yale is on tap for next Saturday (Oct. 18) as well.
