HANOVER, N.H. — Forward Connor Boehm, who had six three-pointers all of last season, drained a trifecta from the left wing at the buzzer to give Dartmouth a thrilling 68-67 victory over IPFW in front of 1,261 fans at Leede Arena in the Big Green's home opener on Friday afternoon. The junior finished the game with his third career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds to help Dartmouth (1-2) record its first win of the young season.
Steve Forbes led four Mastodons in double figures with 19 points, but the quartet could not keep IPFW from falling to 3-2.
Junior point guard Alex Mitola led all players with 21 points — 16 in the second half — and senior Gabas Maldunas added 18 to go with eight rebounds and four blocks to pace the Big Green.
Dartmouth was clinging to a 65-62 lead when Joe Edwards dropped in a layup on a set play after a timeout with 53 seconds to go, cutting the Big Green advantage to one. When Dartmouth failed to convert at its end, Mastodon guard Isaiah McCray was fouled during the scrum for the rebound and went to the line to shoot two with just 35.9 seconds left. Both of his shots were off the mark, and Boehm pulled down his 13th rebound.
McCray redeemed himself as the Big Green brought the ball up the floor, however, swiping the ball and slamming it home uncontested for a one-point Mastodon lead. Maldunas fired up a shot with 10 seconds left that would not fall, and Dartmouth fouled in desperation to conserve some clock. Going to the line for IPFW was Joe Reed, who was already 7-for-8 at the charity stripe on the afternoon. He sank the first freebie but missed the second, and Boehm was there once again to gobble up the ball off the glass.
Head coach Paul Cormier decided to let his players finish the game without a timeout, and they came through. Junior Malik Gill brought the ball up the floor and dished off to Mitola, who was 9-of-15 shooting for the game and 6-of-9 in the second half. The threat of Mitola launching a fourth three-pointer drew three defenders, and he found a wide-open Boehm on the wing for the game-winner. The celebration that ensued was interrupted by an official review, but continued in earnest when the call was confirmed.
