HANOVER, N.H. — The No. 11 Dartmouth men's squash team defeated No. 10 Navy, 5-4, in the Big Green's home opener on Saturday morning at the Berry Squash Courts.
Dartmouth is 1-1 on the season, while Navy is 12-2.
The Big Green received match wins in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions to take the one-point win over the Midshipmen.
Dartmouth secured the win in the fourth position, when Mark Funk defeated Billy Kacergis, 11-6, 11-3, 11-9. At number seven, Brian Giegerich picked up the fourth point for the Green and White, when he knocked off Reed Whitney, 13-11, 12-10, 11-7.
In the first round of matches (3-6-9), junior Kyle Martino defeated James Kacergis in a four-game match, 12-10, 8-11, 12-10, 11-5. Junior James Fisch needed a fourth game to beat Randy Beck, 11-5, 11-1, 7-11, 11-6. In the ninth spot, Colin Berry bested freshman John Harvey, 11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-3.
In the second rotation (2-5-8), sophomore Glen Brickman was the lone Big Green to secure a win for his team, when he beat William Walker, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7. Junior Alexander Greer dropped a fifth game thriller, 11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5
The final three matches (1-4-7) determined the fate for the Big Green, who at that time was tied with Navy, 3-3, after six matches. The victories by Funk and Giegerich pushed Dartmouth over the minimum points plateau to earn the win. Sophomore Nicholas Harrington forced a fifth game at number one, but fell 11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 5-11, 13-11.
Dartmouth will host Trinity on Sunday at noon at the Berry Squash Courts.
