THIS WEEK
Dartmouth women's hockey will host its third consecutive and final home game of the 2014 portion of the season, taking on No. 1/1 Boston College.
LAST TIME OUT
Over the weekend, the Big Green tied No. 4/4 Quinnipiac, 4-4, on Friday before falling to Princeton by a score of 5-2 on Saturday. A goal by Eleni Tebano with three minutes left in the third stanza of the game against the Bobcats tied the score at four and sent the game to overtime, a first this season for Dartmouth. Both goalies had impressive saves throughout the final 10 minutes of play, preventing either team from scoring, and the game ended in a tie. The last time the Upper Valley squad tied a ranked opponent was on Nov. 12, 2012 against Boston College, which came down to a 3-3 draw. Against the Tigers the following day, the opponent scored twice before the Green was able to tie the score with two of its own in the second, courtesy of Tebano and Karlee Odland. The third period was a strong one, but not for the home team, as Princeton would score three-unanswered goals within an eight-minute span.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
With its latest win – an 8-1 blowout at Maine on Friday – the No. 1 team in the country secured its 14th consecutive victory to mark the longest winning streak in program history. The only game this season that produced a result other than a win was a 2-2 tie at St. Lawrence on Oct. 11. Since then, the Eagles have scored no fewer than four goals a game, have allowed no more than two goals and have shut out six opponents. Alex Carpenter not only leads the team, but leads all Division I players with 18 goals and 23 assists for an impressive 41 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST BC
Despite a pair of Lindsey Allen goals, the Big Green opened the 2013-14 regular season with a 7-2 loss to No. 2 Boston College on Oct. 20 at Kelley Rink. Dartmouth opened scoring just over a minute into the game as Allen potted her eighth career goal, as Laura Stacey and Tebano picked up assists. Allen's marker would be the only one in the opening stanza, but BC would tie the game at one early in the second as Haley Skarupa netted an unassisted tally. Allen struck again three minutes into the second period, scoring on the power play to give the Green a 2-1 lead, which did not last long, as Kristyn Capizzano tied the game at two just under eight minutes into the second. After Capizzano's equalizer, the Eagles scored five goals to pull away.
ECAC HOCKEY STANDINGS
The conference standings this week are much the same as last week, but with a few small changes. The day after tying Dartmouth, Quinnipiac suffered its first loss to an ECAC Hockey rival, falling to Harvard, 2-1. Even with the defeat, the Bobcats remain atop the rankings with a record of 6-1-2 and 14 points. Clarkson is close behind with a mark of 6-2-1 for 13 points after falling to Cornell on Friday by a score of 8-3. The Big Green slipped one place to eighth following their 0-1-1 weekend.
HUDAK & CO.
Having been with the Big Green women's hockey team since the 2003-04 season, Mark Hudak has compiled a record of 209-114-29 as he continues through his 12th season. His accomplishments with the team include two Ivy League titles, two ECAC Tournament titles, one ECAC regular-season title, six NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four showings. On the bench, Hudak is joined by associate head coach Holley Tyng, who is in her 10th season with the team, and assistant coach Josh Liegl, who returns to the Big Green coaching staff for his third year.
CAPTAINS
The Green and White are led by captain Karlee Odland, and alternate captains Illikainen and Catherine Berghuis. This is the first time since the 2010-11 season that just one player will wear the 'C'. So far in the 2014-15 season, Odland leads with three goals and three assists for six points. Berghuis has netted one and three helpers, and Illikainen has tallied one goal and two assists.
LEADING THE WAY
With her five goals and seven assists, Laura Stacey leads the Big Green with 12 points. The junior has scored at least one point in all but two games this season. Allen is Dartmouth's leading goal scorer with seven markers. In Dartmouth's 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Nov. 8, she scored a hat trick.
FRESH FACES
Four freshmen were added to the roster at the start of the season. The talented group consists of forwards Brooke Ahbe, Elena Horton and Morgan Turner, and defenseman Hailey Noronha. Ahbe was selected to the United States U18 National team that won silver at the U18 World Championships in Hungary this past year, while Noronha was a two-time member of the Canada U18 National Team that won gold in Budapest in March. Horton and Turner's teams have both played at the USA National Championships. Since first donning the Green and White uniform less than a month ago, Turner and Ahbe have each netted one goal, Horton has tallied one assist and Noronha leads the group with three helpers.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
After recording a career-high 38 saves at Harvard on Tuesday, sophomore Robyn Chemago had a busy weekend in net against Quinnipiac and Princeton. She stopped 29 shots against the Bobcats and registered 16 saves against Princeton the following day. The Big Green goalie is 4-5-1 in the cage after having played every minute so far this season. She has allowed 26 goals, stopped 236 shots, and has a save percentage of .901 and 2.59 goals against average.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR DARTMOUTH?
On Sunday, Dec. 14, Dartmouth will travel to Burlington to face Vermont at 7 p.m. After that, it will not be back in action until New Year's Eve, when it closes the 2014 portion of the season with a 2 p.m. game at Northeastern.
