THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will have a busy weekend in Thompson Arena, hosting ECAC hockey rivals Cornell at 7 p.m. on Friday and Colgate at 4 p.m. on Saturday. These are the last of the conference teams that the Big Green have yet to face this season.
LAST TIME OUT
After trailing by a goal heading into the third period, Dartmouth scored four times, coming from behind to defeat No. 5/5 Harvard, 4-2, at Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson, who had not dropped a game since early November, had their 10-game winning streak snapped. Leading the team were Morgan Illikainen and Lindsey Allen, who both ended the day with two points. Illikainen scored Dartmouth's first goal and assisted on Allen's, while Allen scored twice, including the equalizer and the empty netter for insurance. It was Brooke Ahbe that ultimately scored the game winner, netting a power-play goal at the 13:51 mark of the third to give Dartmouth its first lead of the afternoon.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell has been unbeaten since a 2-0 loss at Minnesota-Duluth on Nov. 22, winning seven and tying three games during that time. Over the weekend, the Big Red shutout Yale, 2-0, before defeating Brown by a score of 4-2. A few days before that, they had a 6-2 victory over No. 6 Boston University. Brianne Jenner leads the way with 10 markers and 18 helpers for 28 points and she is currently tied for first in the conference in points.
LAST TIME AGAINST CORNELL
On Jan. 17, 2014, Dartmouth fell to No. 3 Cornell on the road by a score of 3-0. Special teams were the different in the contest as the Big Green committed 10 penalties and the Big Red were whistled for a season-high nine. The 19 combined power-play chances were the most in a conference game at that point in the 2013-14 season. Cornell's Taylor Woods opened scoring by netting her first of two tallies on the evening a little over midway through the first period. With the man advantage, Woods netted her seventh of the season with Hanna Bunton and Kelly Murray registering the assists. Woods stretched the Big Red lead to two at 9:15 in the second period. Late in the third, Jess Brown put the game out of reach with her third of the season. Netminder Lindsay Holdcroft made 35 saves in the losing effort.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate is most recently coming off a 1-1 weekend following a 3-0 shutout of Brown on Friday and 5-1 loss to Yale on Saturday. Prior to their victory over the Bears, the Raiders had won just one game, against Syracuse, while dropping nine others. Megan Sullivan is first on the team with 13 points on seven goals and six assists.
LAST TIME AGAINST COLGATE
Midway through the third period, Allen skated in on a breakaway and slid a backhand past Colgate goaltender Brittney Brook for the eventual game winner as the Big Green topped the Raiders, 2-1, on Nov. 25, 2013 in ECAC Hockey action. The win was the first at home in 2013-14 for Dartmouth and the victory also ran the Green's unbeaten streak to 11 games versus Colgate. Dating back to February of 2009, the Upper Valley squad are 9-0-2 against the Raiders. Catherine Berghuis opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest and, tallying her second marker of the season. After skating scoreless for over 20 minutes, Colgate tied the game at one as Kayla Haus deflected a shot past Holdcroft three minutes into the second stanza. Allen's fourth marker of the year in the third gave the Big Green a one-goal cushion and Holdcroft stood her ground, making seven saves in the third. Karlee Odland picked up her second assist of the season, sending the pass that broke Allen out. Colgate pulled their goalie with under a minute to play and the Big Green defense held the lead for their second conference triumph of the season.
ECAC HOCKEY STANDINGS
Quinnipiac, who played two non-conference games over the weekend, holds on to the top spot with an 11-1-2 mark. Following its 4-2 loss to Dartmouth on Saturday, Harvard has now slipped one place to third with a record of 9-2-1, while Clarkson moved up to second with a 9-2-2 mark. At 6-5-1, the Big Green remain in seventh, behind Cornell (7-2-2) and Princeton (8-6-0) and ahead of Yale (5-7-0). Colgate, Rensselaer, Brown and Union make up the bottom part of the standings.
HUDAK & CO.
Having been with the Big Green women's hockey team since the 2003-04 season, Mark Hudak has compiled a record of 215-117-29 as he continues through his 12th season. His accomplishments with the team include two Ivy League titles, two ECAC Tournament titles, one ECAC regular-season title, six NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four showings. On the bench, Hudak is joined by associate head coach Holley Tyng, who is in her 10th season with the team, and assistant coach Josh Liegl, who returns to the Big Green coaching staff for his third year.
CAPTAINS
The Green and White are led by captain Karlee Odland, and alternate captains Illikainen and Catherine Berghuis. This is the first time since the 2010-11 season that just one player is wearing the 'C'. So far in the 2014-15 season, Odland leads with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Illikainen has netted four goals and six assists, scoring Dartmouth's first goal against Harvard and adding a helper on the next goal, while Berghuis has two goals and five helpers of her own.
LEADING THE WAY
After a two-goal weekend, Allen has returned to the top, leading the team in both markers (15) and points (19) when combined with her four assists. She is also first in the conference in goals. Kennedy Ottenbreit is a close second with 18 points on nine goals and nine helpers, while Laura Stacey is right behind with 17 points on six goals and a team-leading 11 assists.
FRESH FACES
Four freshmen were added to the roster at the start of the season. The talented group consists of forwards Brooke Ahbe, Elena Horton and Morgan Turner, and defenseman Hailey Noronha. Ahbe was selected to the United States U18 National team that won silver at the U18 World Championships in Hungary this past year, while Noronha was a two-time member of the Canada U18 National Team that won gold in Budapest in March. Horton and Turner's teams have both played at the USA National Championships. Since first donning the Green and White uniform in October, Turner has netted one goal and Horton has tallied one assist.
