STOWE, Vt. — Sophomore
Patrick Caldwell (Lyme, N.H.) won his third consecutive Nordic race, and junior
Lizzie Kistler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) finished atop the leaderboard in the women's slalom to lead the Dartmouth ski team to a second-place finish at the Vermont Carnival at the Mount Mansfield Ski Club and the Trapp Family Lodge. The Big Green amassed 885 points, while the host Vermont Catamounts claimed the title with 940.
A day after the women's alpine team earned the top two spots on the podium in the giant slalom, the men's Nordic squad duplicated the feat as Caldwell and senior captain
Silas Talbot (Anchorage, Alaska) ruled the 15K Classic. Featuring a the mass start, the race was tight through the first lap with Caldwell in third, sophomore
Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) in fourth and Talbot sixth, all within eight seconds of Vermont's Cole Morgan at the front of the pack. After the second lap, the three Big Green skiers led the field with Caldwell in the lead and Stocek right on his heels. Caldwell then put some distance between himself and his teammates, eventually winning the race with a time of 41:37.0, claiming his third consecutive carnival race and 11.7 seconds ahead of Talbot. Stocek finished up in 42:06.7 in fifth place allowing the team to collect 136 points. The Catamounts, which had the third- and fourth-place skiers, were a distant second with 111.
The women's Nordic team skated its way to a spot on the podium as well as junior
Corey Stock (Lincoln, Mass.) pushed her way toward the front after completing the first lap in 16:27.5 behind 10 other skiers. But she made up ground with the second-fastest time on the final lap to vault into third in 33:21.9. New Hampshire's Annika Taylor won comfortably with a time of 32:36.3, 24 seconds ahead of Mary-Kate Cirelli of Vermont. Also scoring points for Dartmouth were senior
Carly Wynn (Queensbury, N.Y.) in 16th at 34:32.6 and sophomore
Jessa Fogel (Bow, N.H.) in 28th at 35:13.2. No one school dominated in the event, but the Catamounts were able to squeak out the most points, besting UNH, 104-102. The Big Green finished fifth with 87, three behind Bates.
Over on the slopes of Big Spruce, Kistler posted the fastest time on the first run in 55.78 seconds, more than half a second better than anyone else. Combined with her second run in 59.16 — second best — she defeated the field by more than a full second with a combined time of 1:54.94. But four of the next five skiers belonged to Vermont, allowing the Catamounts to win the event by 12 points, 127-115. Sophomore
Maisie Ide (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored points for the Big Green in eighth at 1:58.97, while freshman
Kelly Moore (Ottawa, Ontario) finished just outside the top 10 in 2:01.28, good for 11th.
For the second straight day, freshman Kevyn Read (Calgary, Alberta) led the Big Green in the men's alpine, finishing sixth in the slalom a day after taking fifth in the giant slalom. The time on his first run of 56.27 seconds had him in fifth, and even though his second time was slightly better at 55.96 seconds, the course was running a bit faster to set him back just one spot in the final standings. Read was joined in the top 10 by senior captain
Ben Morse (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) in ninth at 1:53.13 and sophomore
Dylan Brooks (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) right behind in 10th at 1:53.17. Vermont swept the podium, as well as fourth place for good measure, to defeat the second-place Big Green by 34 points, 141-107.
Dartmouth heads to Smuggler's Notch and Sleepy Hollow in Vermont next weekend for the St. Michael's Carnival, which starts on Friday, Jan. 30.
