THIS WEEKEND
With just eight regular season games to go, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will hit the road for the second to last time this weekend. On Friday, the Big Green will face Princeton at 7 p.m. and, the following day, they will take on Quinnipiac at 4 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
This past weekend, the Green and White hosted ECAC Hockey opponents Cornell and Colgate, falling to the Big Red by a score of 2-1 before being shutout by the Raiders, 2-0, the following afternoon. After Cornell scored twice in the second, Laura Stacey lessened the visitor's lead by scoring her seventh of the season at 13:02 in the final period. Dartmouth outshot the Big Red, 29-25, in the loss. The next day, Miriam Drubel put Colgate on the board at 5:47 in the second period and Kayla Haus put the game further out of reach for the Upper Valley squad with a goal 44 seconds in to the third. Dartmouth outshot Colgate, 27-21, with Eleni Tebano leading the way with five attempts.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Princeton ended the weekend with a record of 2-1 after a 4-1 victory over Yale and a 5-1 win against Brown before falling to No. 1 Boston College by a score of 4-2 on Monday. The longest winning streak the Tigers have had all season was back in October and November when they defeated Penn State, Cornell, Colgate and Rochester Institute of Technology. Kelsey Koelzer leads the team with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST PRINCETON
On Dec. 6, Dartmouth was defeated by Princeton, 5-2, on a Saturday afternoon inside Thompson Arena. For the fifth game in a row, the opponent struck first, scoring the first goal at 3:43 in the opening period at the hands of Koelzer. The Tigers scored once more at 19:57 before heading into the second period with a 2-0 lead. The home team tied the score during the second period with a goal by Ailish Forfar at 1:04 and another by Karlee Odland at 14:32. In the final period, the opponent scored three times to put the game out of reach for the home team. The Green outshot the Tigers, 28-21, and Robyn Chemago had 16 saves compared to Kimberly Newell's 26.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Last weekend, Quinnipiac suffered losses to No.6/7 Boston University (4-1) and Boston College (2-1) on the road. Prior to their defeat by the Terriers, the Bobcats had been riding a seven-game winning streak that dated back to a 2-1 loss to Harvard on Dec. 6. Freshman Taylar Cianfarano leads the team as the only Bobcat to reach double-digit goals (14). Paired with 10 helpers, she has scored 24 points so far this season.
LAST TIME AGAINST QUINNIPIAC
A goal by sophomore Eleni Tebano with three minutes left in the third stanza of the game against No. 4/4 Quinnipiac on Dec. 5 tied the score at four and sent the game to overtime, a first this season for the Big Green. Both goalies had impressive saves throughout the final 10 minutes of play, preventing either team from scoring, and the game ended in a tie. The last time the Big Green tied a ranked opponent was on Nov. 12, 2012 against Boston College, which came down to a three-all draw. Kennedy Ottenbreit had a big day for the Big Green, scoring the first two goals and adding a helper on another, ending the day with three points.
ECAC HOCKEY STANDINGS
Quinnipiac, who has not played a conference game since Jan. 10, remains first with an 11-1-2 mark. Harvard and Clarkson have, once again, flip-flopped, with the Crimson returning to second with a record of 11-2-1 and the Golden Knights dipping to third at 9-2-2. At 6-7-1, the Big Green remain in seventh, behind St. Lawrence (8-3-2) and Princeton (8-6-0) and ahead of Yale (6-8-0). Rensselaer, Colgate, Brown and Union make up the bottom part of the standings.
HUDAK & CO.
Having been with the Big Green women's hockey team since the 2003-04 season, Mark Hudak has compiled a record of 215-119-29 as he continues through his 12th season. His accomplishments with the team include two Ivy League titles, two ECAC Tournament titles, one ECAC regular-season title, six NCAA Tournament appearances and two Frozen Four showings. On the bench, Hudak is joined by associate head coach Holley Tyng, who is in her 10th season with the team, and assistant coach Josh Liegl, who returns to the Big Green coaching staff for his third year.
CAPTAINS
The Green and White are led by captain Karlee Odland, and alternate captains Illikainen and Catherine Berghuis. This is the first time since the 2010-11 season that just one player is wearing the 'C'. So far in the 2014-15 season, Odland leads with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Illikainen has netted four goals and six assists and Berghuis has two goals and five helpers of her own.
LEADING THE WAY
Lindsey Allen and Ottenbreit are tied for first on the team in points with 19. Allen has a team-leading 15 goals and four assists, while Ottenbreit has netted nine goals and has tacked on 10 helpers. Stacey is right behind with 18 points on seven goals and 11 assists, tallying Dartmouth's lone marker against Cornell on Friday night.
FRESH FACES
Four freshmen were added to the roster at the start of the season. The talented group consists of forwards Brooke Ahbe, Elena Horton and Morgan Turner, and defenseman Hailey Noronha. Ahbe was selected to the United States U18 National team that won silver at the U18 World Championships in Hungary this past year, while Noronha was a two-time member of the Canada U18 National Team that won gold in Budapest in March. Horton and Turner's teams have both played at the USA National Championships. Since first donning the Green and White uniform in October, Turner has netted one goal and Horton has tallied one assist. Ahbe has two goals and an assist under her belt, while Noronha leads the group with four helpers.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Chemago stopped a total of 39 shots in the losses against Cornell and Colgate over the weekend, while allowing four goals. Throughout 2014-15, the sophomore has started each and every game, allowing 48 goals and making 452 saves. She has a save percentage of .904 and a 2.29 goals against average.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR DARTMOUTH?
After road tripping through New Jersey and Connecticut, the Green will return to Thompson Arena for games against Brown and Yale on Feb. 6-7.
