FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior Dovydas Sakinis played well on the third day of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship on Saturday, winning both of his matches against ranked opponents.
In the consolation quarterfinals, he defeated No. 75 Diogo Rocha of Denver in three sets, narrowly falling in the first, 6-7(5), before taking the remaining two, 6-1, 6-4.
Later in the day against No. 5 Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame, the Big Green senior had a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
“It's a great thing for Dovydas to get to play this many matches against such good competition,” head coach Chris Drake said. “Every win here is a high-quality win and there are so many learning opportunity during these matches. He did a nice job today finding ways to play some of his best tennis in the third sets of his matches. We are thrilled that he will get to play on the last day of this event tomorrow.
Sakinis will return to action on Sunday in the consolation finals at 10 a.m.
