Men's Tennis
vs Dartmouth Invite #1

HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 42 Dartmouth men's tennis team opened the season with a pair of home victories on Saturday, taking down Buffalo, 6-1, before blanking Bryant, 7-0.
“I thought we did a good job responding to the way Buffalo came out in the first match today,” head coach Chris Drake said. “They put us on our heels by playing some good tennis right out of the gate, and we needed to respond positively in order to turn the momentum and I thought we did that very well. We are getting better as a team at knowing what we do well and sticking to it in times of adversity.”
The Big Green opened the match against the Bulls by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Seniors Dovydas Sakinis and Brendan Tannenbaum had a 6-0 victory over Akhil Mehta and Tony Miller, while junior Diego Pedraza and freshman Roko Glasnovic defeated Pablo Alvarez and Amar Hromic, 7-6(7).
Sophomore Ciro Riccardi had a really close three-set victory over Alvarez with scores of 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, while classmate Max Fliegner also went to three sets, defeating Mehta by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Junior George Wall had a 6-4, 7-5 win over Noah Hajdu-Andersson and Sakinis won it for Dartmouth with a 7-6(3), 6-4 defeat of Hromic.
In the second match of the day against Bryant, the Green easily won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Wall and Fliegner had a 6-2 victory over Max Vogt and Luke Lorenz, Tannenbaum and junior Max Schmidt took down Scott Plutt and Oliver Welsh, 6-2, and Glasnovic and fellow freshman Joey Haig had a 6-4 win over Artur Jakubowski and Jorge Ortiz-Garcia.
Midgley and fellow sophomore Aman Agarwal both dropped their first sets, but turned things around to win. Against Jakubowski, Agarwal fell, 3-6, to start the match before winning the next two sets, 6-3, 7-6(4). Midgley also fell in the first by a score of 3-6 and took down Ortiz-Garcia, 6-3, 7-5, in the remaining two.
“Against Bryant, we came out strong in doubles and then withstood their challenge in singles,” Drake continued. “Overall today, we won four matches after losing the first set. Our guys expect to come back when they are down and they are good at doing just that. This was a good start to our season."
January is a busy month for Dartmouth, as all six matches it will play are taking place at the Boss Tennis Center. Next up for the Green will be a match against Clemson on Friday, Jan. 22 and one against Penn State two days later.
