HANOVER, N.H. – Continuing with its busy January that includes six home matches in the span of two weeks, the No. 41 Dartmouth men's tennis team took down No. 72 Clemson, 6-1, at the Boss Tennis Center on Friday evening. The Big Green improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Tigers dipped to 1-2.
“We set a good tone for the match today by playing the type of points that we wanted to play beginning with the first point of doubles,” head coach Chris Drake said. “Even when we didn't execute perfectly, we were comfortable on the court because our intentions were good. As the doubles sets continued, our level of execution got better and better.”
At No. 1 doubles, seniors Dovydas Sakinis and Brendan Tannenbaum had a 6-4 victory over Luke Johnson and Robert Dudley, while, at No. 3, junior George Wall and sophomore Max Fliegner also had a 6-4 win, defeating Austin Ansari and Christian Harris. At No. 2, freshman Roko Glasnovic and junior Max Schmidt traded blows with Alex Favrot and Daffra Sanon and ultimately walked away with a 7-6(6) victory.
Dartmouth picked up the first three points in singles play to clinch the win. No. 18 Sakinis took down Johnson, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 1 position, while Fliegner had a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ansari at No. 4. A 6-4, 6-4 victory by Wall over Arturo Pinazo at No. 5 gave the Green its fourth point.
“In singles, we jumped on them early and put them under a lot of pressure by winning five of the six first sets,” Drake continued. “I thought we stuck to our individual game plans very well tonight and trusted our games.”
The Big Green will return to Boss on Sunday for an 11 a.m. match against No. 53 Penn State.
