POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Marist held the visiting Dartmouth Big Green without a field goal over the final 10 minutes of the first half, then held off a furious press to earn a 73-63 victory on Tuesday night at McCann Arena. Khallid Hart scored 27 points with a team-high eight rebounds while going 14-of-16 at the line in the second half to help the Red Foxes (1-1) earn their first victory of 2015-16.
Freshman Evan Boudreaux led Dartmouth (0-2) with his first collegiate double-double, recording 16 points and 12 rebounds, while senior captain Tommy Carpenter came off the bench to contribute 10 points. But with senior Connor Boehm limited to 13 minutes before fouling out, and classmates Malik Gill and Kevin Crescenzi joining him with more than two minutes to play, the Big Green rally in the final minutes could not be sustained.
Marist enjoyed a fine shooting night, knocking down 50 percent from the floor, including 10-of-23 (.435) behind the arc. Hart knocked down 3-of-5 three-pointers while Phillip Lawrence-Ricks went 3-of-4 from downtown to lead the long-distance barrage, while reserve Isaiah Lamb added 15 points with a pair of treys. At the other end of the floor, the Big Green struggled with their accuracy, hitting 21-of-62 (.339) overall and just 3-of-19 (.158) three-pointers.
Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead and was in control of the game, however, for the first 10 minutes. The Big Green advantage reached as many as eight at 13-5 following a Carpenter baseline jumper. Marist started to gradually cut into its deficit using the long ball as Hart, who had 10 of his 27 points in the opening stanza, and Lawrence-Ricks both drilled trifectas to get the Red Foxes within two at 13-11.
Yet Dartmouth continued to hold onto the lead thanks to buckets by Carpenter, Cameron Smith and Boehm. Hart drilled a jumper to put Marist on top for the first time at 20-19 with about seven and a half minutes until the break, but Carpenter sank both ends of a one-and-one to reclaim the lead moments later.
A cold spell that could rival anything El Niño can cause suddenly befell the Big Green as they missed their final 15 field goal attempts of the half. Meanwhile, the Red Foxes quickly rained down a pair of triples to start an 11-0 run over a three-minute span for a 31-21 advantage. By the time the intermission arrived, Marist led 33-24.
The second half started like the first as Dartmouth scored the first three buckets to quickly climb back within two points, causing Marist head coach Mike Maker — a Big Green assistant from 1991-2002 — to call time to regroup his team. For the next eight minutes, the difference wavered between two and five points as neither side could put together a run.
But with nine minutes to play, Kristinn Palsson provided his only points of the night with a long three-pointer to start a 7-0 Red Fox run — during which Boehm fouled out — as Marist built its lead back to 10 at 57-47. When Hart popped a three with about six minutes to go, the Red Foxes seemed to be in command with an 11-point advantage.
Yet the Big Green would not give in as they turned up the defensive pressure to help them score eight points in a 45-second span and chop the deficit down to five at 64-59 with four minutes on the clock.
That would be as close as Dartmouth could get, however, as Marist scored the next eight points — six from Hart — to seal the Big Green's fate.
While Hart provided all but two of the free throws in the second half for the Red Foxes, the two teams were nearly even at the charity stripe on the night with Marist sinking 19-of-26 (.731) and Dartmouth 18-of-25 (.720). The Big Green had a slight edge on the glass, 38-35, while limiting the Red Foxes to just three offensive boards. Eleven Dartmouth steals contributed to 19 Marist turnovers, but it was not enough to overcome the home team on this night.
Dartmouth gets a break for fall exams and will not play again until after Thanksgiving when it takes on LIU Brooklyn in the home opener at Leede Arena on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live via Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network with Jay Burnham making his debut as the voice of the Big Green.
Notes: This was the first game between the two schools since December of 2000. Marist leads the series now, 3-2 ...Gill finished the game with six assists and five steals, leading both teams in each category.
