THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth men's hockey team is back in action this weekend with a pair of games at No. 12 Michigan on Friday and Saturday evenings.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green are coming off a 1-1-0 weekend Nov. 13-14 at Princeton and No. 4 Quinnipiac. Dartmouth defeated the Tigers, 3-2, in the Friday game before a misleading 6-2 loss the following evening to the Bobcats in which the Green and White were in contention most of the game until a five-minute power play saw the home team score twice to all but seal things.
WHY THE BREAK?
The Green had a weekend off due to the college's academic schedule at the end of the fall semester for final exams.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The Wolverines play host to Dartmouth ranked 12th in the most recent USCHO national poll and 11th in the USA Hockey release (Nov. 23). Michigan is 6-2-1 overall after splitting with Boston University this past weekend in Beantown (L, 3-2/W, 4-2). Freshman and Flyers draft pick Cooper Marody leads the team in scoring with 11 points and goals with six. Classmate Kyle Connor — a Winnipeg selection — is not far behind with 10 points on five goals and five assists. The goaltending duties have been split between senior Steve Racine (.896 save% / 3.07 GAA / 3-1-1) and junior Zach Nagelvoort (.878 save% / 3.00 GAA / 3-1-0) with the duo posting nearly identical stats.
AGAINST THE WOLVERINES
These two teams last met on Dec. 7-8, 1979 with a pair of games in Ann Arbor. Michigan won the first game, 10-2, before taking down the Big Green once again the following night, 6-5. Dartmouth would go on to get the last laugh as they reached the Frozen Four that season, backstopped by then-junior and current head coach Bob Gaudet '81. Gaudet made 35 saves in the second game of the weekend against the Wolverines, including 16 in the third period. In six all-time meetings, the series is split 3-3-0.
A REMATCH OF SORTS…
Dartmouth and Michigan met in the first ever NCAA national championship on March 20, 1948 in Colorado Springs. The Wolverines won their first of a national-record nine titles, 8-4, thanks to a four-goal third period. Both teams scored two goals apiece in each of the first two periods before Michigan pulled away in the final frame. The teams met again the following year back at the Broadmoor Arena in Colorado in the national semifinals, where the Big Green earned some level of revenge in a 4-2 win in the semifinals to earn a spot in the national title game for the second straight season (vs. Boston College/L, 4-3).
WHAT'S A “NON-CONFERENCE” GAME?
After six straight ECAC Hockey games to start the season, the Big Green will finally play the first of their seven non-conference games this season. Dartmouth opened the year with five contests against Ivy League teams and then took on ECAC foe Quinnipiac. Michigan, on the other hand, has yet to play a Big Ten game with the two against the Green and White the final games before taking on Wisconsin next weekend.
THE KALK AND THE WALK
Sophomore Corey Kalk had a solid weekend on the Princeton-Quinnipiac road swing. Kalk had a goal in both games and added an assist on Carl Hesler's first-period goal at Quinnipiac for his first multi-point game of the season. His second-period marker in Hamden came on the power play.
BACK AND FORTH
Like he has done all season, Gaudet rotated through his two senior goalies against the Tigers and Bobcats. James Kruger made 30 saves in earning the win at Princeton, while Charles Grant turned aside 33 in a losing effort in Hamden. The 33 saves against the Bobcats were the most by a Dartmouth goalie this season.
AWAY FROM THE NORTHEAST
Dartmouth has played just 17 total games outside of the Northeast (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey) since it's last trip to Michigan in 1979.

A HOMECOMING
Sophomore defenseman River Rymsha returns home to Michigan for the first time in his college career this weekend. A native of Huntington Woods, Michigan, Rymsha grew up just 45 minutes northeast of Ann Arbor. Rymsha makes his homecoming ranked third in the nation in penalty minutes per game (4.00). He is the lone Michigander on this year's roster.
DIFFERENT ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM
These two teams are on two different ends of the spectrum when it comes to penalties. Dartmouth is 14th in the nation with 13.17 PIMs per game, while Michigan is the fourth-least penalized team in Division I at 7.33 a contest. The Wolverines have been whistled for just 33 penalties this season, just three more than Dartmouth in three more games and the fewest by any non-Ivy program this season.
WINNING DRAWS
After Dartmouth won a remarkable 39-of-50 faceoffs at Princeton and another 34 at Quinnipiac, the Big Green are third in the nation in winning percentage in the circle at .563. Only Union (.569) and Boston College (.567) have been more proficient on the draws than Dartmouth.
