HANOVER, N.H. – Behind a 15-point night from junior Fanni Szabo, the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Niagara, 60-47, on Friday night at Leede Arena.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 3-10, while the Purple Eagles fall to 1-7.
Three Dartmouth players scored in double-figures as senior Lakin Roland recorded 12 points and sophomore Kate Letkewicz added 11. As a team, the Big Green shot 46 percent from the field, going 23 for 50 and 46 percent from behind the arc, making 7 of 15.
In what was a back-and-forth first half that included five ties, Dartmouth once again continued to perform well in the first quarter playing to a 15 all tie before taking a 28-21 lead at the half.
After Niagara opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run, the Big Green responded after back-to-back field goals by Szabo and a crucial three pointer by sophomore Amber Mixon that gave Dartmouth a 40-32 lead with 2:14 in the quarter.
“That's the Fanni Szabo we know and love,” Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes said. “Offensively, that's what Fanni is capable of doing. We're proud of Fanni today for stepping up and putting 15 points on the board and going 50 percent from the field. We need her to do that consistently.”
In the final stanza, Szabo continued to shine as Dartmouth went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by three's from Szabo and Letkewicz. The Purple Eagles tried to get back into the game, but the Big Green defense held after a trey by Roland put the game out of reach for good.
“We built some nice leads and Niagara came over and knocked that structure down, so we had to build another one,” Koclanes said. “We kept talking about building and that fourth quarter tonight we built our tallest structure.”
Dartmouth returns to action on Monday, when the Big Green take on Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., at 11:15 a.m.
