WORCESTER, Mass. – For the second game in a row, the Dartmouth women's basketball played tough defense down the stretch, as the Big Green took down Holy Cross, 60-54 in Worcester, Mass.
With the victory, Dartmouth improves to 4-10, while the Crusaders falls to 3-8.
The Big Green won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Holy Cross 36-22 in a total team-effort where the Dartmouth bench outscored Holy Cross by nine points.
Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes is happy with the growth her team has displayed in its last few games. With today's victory over the Crusaders, Dartmouth has won consecutive games for the first time this season.
“They're starting to understand how it takes every single one of them playing their roles consistently,” Koclanes said. “They're starting to see how important kids coming off the bench are. The way the game of basketball is meant to be played is a total team effort. When you start to see our numbers on the stat sheet looking more balanced, then you're going to start to see more victories from our team.”
Once again, senior Lakin Roland continued to shine as she led all scorers with 24 points. Sophomore Kate Letkewicz tailed 10 points, while senior Daisy Jordan scored six points and grabbed four rebounds in front of her hometown crowd.
Holy Cross began the game on a 7-0 run to take an early 11-4 lead. However, Dartmouth responded in a big way completing a 14-0 run to finish the quarter.
Toward the end of the second, the Crusaders inched back, tying the game at 31 with a steal and layup just before the buzzer. The Big Green came out after the break and dictated play completing a 5-0 run to take a nine-point lead into the final stanza.
Holy Cross would not go away quietly, shooting the ball well, the Crusaders went on a 6-0 which was ended by a Jordan field goal with around five minutes to play. With just two minutes left in the game, sophomore Amber Mixon drove hard in the lane to find an open Roland who made the layup to give Dartmouth a 55-51 lead.
On the Big Green's next possession, Roland hit a jumper as the shot clock hit zero that gave Dartmouth a 57-51 lead and put the game out of reach for good.
The Big Green return to action after Christmas on Dec. 29 to take on Central Connecticut State. Tip off from New Britain is at 7:00 p.m.
