NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Despite a 20-point night from sophomore Kate Letkewicz, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Central Connecticut State 59-55, in New Britain, Conn.
The loss drops the Big Green to 4-11, while the Blue Devils improve to 3-8.
Letkewicz's 20 points were the most the guard has scored in a game this season as she went 7 of 13 from the field and shot 5 of 8 from behind the arc. As a team, Dartmouth shot 44.9 percent from the field compared to Central's 44 percent. Senior Lakin Roland added 17 points for the Big Green and moved closer to 1,000 career points with 995.
“We had three practices since our break,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “I was somewhat pleased with the way that we returned. The team came back in shape and they had done their strength and conditioning program over the break and that was clear on the practice floor. However, we had spells in practice where our bench just didn't show up. We call them game changers and its true because they can change the game in a positive direction or the other way. It's not placing blame, it's just one part of our team that needs some serious work.”
In a back and fourth first quarter, a Letkewicz trey gave Dartmouth a 9-5 lead, however the Blue Devils stormed back to take an 11-9 advantage after one.
CCSU started the second quarter on an 8-0 run before going on a 12-5 run to take a 17-14 lead. The Big Green kept fighting, eventually taking a 26-25 lead after Roland hit a key three-pointer before the halftime buzzer.
The Blue Devils came on strong in the third, eventually taking a 15-point lead by the 3:55 mark for their largest lead of the night. Dartmouth, ever resilient, went on a 9-0 run to close out the quarter with a three-pointer by Andi Norman and jumper by Daisy Jordan to cut the lead to 48-40.
In the final stanza, the Big Green got close but ran out of time to complete the comeback, despite Central's struggles at the free throw line in the game's final minutes.
Dartmouth returns to action on Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. when the Big Green travel to NJIT for their final non-conference game of the season.
