SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union scored two goals in a four-minute span early in the first period and other into the empty net in the final minute Saturday night to earn a 3-0 win against the visiting Dartmouth men's hockey team at Messa Rink.
Though the Dutchmen (5-8-4, 2-5-1 ECAC Hockey) picked up the conference win, few in attendance would argue that the Big Green (3-6-1, 3-5-0 ECAC Hockey) were not the aggressors all night, dictating tempo and controlling the play.
However, they ran into Union goalie Alex Sakellaropoulus who turned aside all 34 shots he faced in earning the shutout. Dartmouth's Devin Buffalo stopped 26 in the losing effort, suffering his first career loss despite several key saves down the stretch.
The Dutchmen got goals from Brett Supinski and Spencer Foo in the opening period to give the home team some breathing room. They managed to hold that two-goal edge until Mike Vecchione hit the empty net with 39 seconds left to end the visitors' last-minute fevered comeback bid.
The win was the first against Dartmouth for Union since Game 2 of the 2014 ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals after the Green and White swept the Dutchmen in last year's season series (2-0-0).
The Big Green wrap-up their seven-game road trip Friday, Dec. 11 at in-state rival New Hampshire. Puck drop from the Whittemore Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
