TAMPA, Fla. — The Dartmouth softball team dropped its final game at the Wilson DeMarini Tournament, a 1-0 deficit to Marshall (11-3) on Sunday morning at the USF Softball Stadium. Dartmouth falls to 1-4 on the season.
Senior Kristen Rumley (1-3) tossed a terrific game but allowed a RBI single in the third inning. Rumley's six-inning four-hit deficit saw the ace throw a season-best seven strikeouts. Marshall's Jordan Dixon went the distance and allowed just five hits to the Big Green and struck out five.
Sophomore leadoff hitter Alyssa Jorgensen, juniors Katie McEachern and Kelsey Miller, freshman Brittany Mann and Rumley all reached base for the Big Green.
Rumley got herself out of a situation in the opening frame when she allowed a single to the leadoff batter, but freshman Claire Bird gunned down Morgan Zerkle as she attempted to steal second. Kaelynn Greene, the only player to record more than one hit singled to first but was stranded when Rumley got a strikeout and then a pop out to retire the side.
In the third inning, Elicia D'Orazio singled to right field and then stole a pair of bases and scored on another single to right field by Greene. After allowing the lone run in the inning, Rumley did not allow another hit the rest of the way.
Dartmouth had a chance to tie the contest in the sixth, which started with a one-out infield single by Mann. However, Mann could only advance to second after McEachern sent a hit to the outfield.
Dartmouth will compete in the Texas Invitational next weekend in Austin, Texas. The Big Green will meet Lamar and Texas on Friday afternoon. The Texas game will be live on the Longhorn Network, part of the ESPN family of networks.
