AUSTIN, Texas — The Dartmouth softball team nearly knocked off its second nationally ranked team at the Texas Invitational, but the host Longhorns scored on a walk-off double to defeat the Big Green, 1-0. In the opening contest, Dartmouth fell to Lamar, 6-2, in Hanover-like conditions.
Against Texas, senior Kristen Rumley did a fantastic job inside the circle striking out three with 11 ground balls and six fly outs in 6.2 innings. She allowed five hits and just the one run that came off the bat of Randel Leahy.
Dartmouth had chance in the first inning after senior Megan Averitt reached on an error and then junior Katie McEachern walked, but Erica Wright got out of the early jam. In the Dartmouth second, junior Kathy Dzienkowski tripled to right field, but freshman Tiffany Dyson struck out to keep the Big Green off the board.
In the bottom of the third, Texas threatened with a pair of singles but Rumley shut the door with back-to-back groundouts.
Neither side posed any risks in the middle innings, but in the seventh a running mistake allowed for a double play to take Dartmouth potential late offense out of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Erin Shireman doubled to right center to leadoff the frame and was then pinch ran for by Mickenzie Krpec. Rumley got the next two batters to ground out, but the runner advanced consecutive bases before Leahy's double scored the game-winner.
Dzienkowski led the Big Green with a pair of hits in what was a homecoming for the Austin, Texas, native.
In the opening contest, the Lady Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Jenna Holland. Lamar added two more runs in the third, a single tally in the fourth and then another two more in the fifth. Dartmouth cut the deficit to 4-1 in the fourth with an RBI double to left center by sophomore Maddie Damore that scored junior Katie McEachern who walked to begin the frame.
The Big Green added their second run in the contest in the sixth stanza on a sacrifice fly RBI by junior Brianna Lohmann that scored Damore whose one-out single to right center started the three-hit inning. Junior Kelsey Miller and Sophomore Alyssa Jorgensen also singled which loaded the bases.
Dartmouth had a trio in the circle as junior starter Morgan McCalmon (0-1) went 2.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits. Freshman Breanna Ethridge tossed 2.2 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits. Sophomore Ashley Sissel completed the game with a scoreless two innings.
Both teams finished with seven hits, but Dartmouth's four errors allowed for three unearned runs.
Laura Napoli pitched a complete game for the Lady Cardinals and allowed to runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Dartmouth will continue play at the Texas Invitational with a pair of games on Saturday beginning with Lamar at 11 am followed by a nightcap against Texas Southern at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be seen live on ESPN3.com and the Longhorn Network.
