ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 50 Dartmouth men's tennis team defeated No. 52 Michigan, 4-3, on Thursday night at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Big Green improved to 7-4 on the season, while the Wolverines dipped to 3-6.
“Even though we had a short week of practice, I felt it was very productive,” head coach Chris Drake said. “This was a good team win and a positive step for us. And now we will get ready for another tough match in two days against Michigan State.”
Dartmouth claimed the doubles point to open the match. Senior Sam Todd and sophomore Diego Pedraza defeated Davis Crocker and Tyler Gardiner, 6-2, as the first match off the court in the No. 3 position. The No. 18-ranked tandem of junior Dovydas Sakinis and senior Chris Kipouras bested Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu, 6-4, at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.
The Green took a 2-0 lead when No. 82 Sakinis took down Petrone, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles position. Michigan got on the board when No. 112 Zhu defeated No. 108 Kipouras, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, but Dartmouth got another point ahead when junior Brendan Tannenbaum knocked off Crocker, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Max Schmidt's 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Carter Lin in the No. 6 position gave Dartmouth the final point it needed to win the match.
The Green will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 28, when it takes on Michigan State at 2 p.m.
